New King Kog Location

3160725478_9669e6867f.jpg

The Brooklyn bike family continues to grow and grow. Gina recently moved her old King Kog storefront from Marcy ave to Graham ave literally one block from my apartment. I went over this morning to take a few pics. The space is a lot bigger and now has a work stand. Not sure who'll be wrenching there, but it's a big improvement. They'll be getting in more stock in the near future so swing by when you're in town!

Kids These Days

Young Groms from John Prolly on Vimeo.

I was at the Polo Pit today riding around working on lines when these two kids came up and watched me ride for about 30 minutes. They approached me and started asking questions so I picked up my camera and filmed them. Young guns soon to be rippers!

Sorry the volume's so low, but if you turn it up on your computer and in the video, you can hear them fine.

Iced Out

3174842539_21b9e81680.jpg

I'm not a messenger nor have I ever been one, but I do commute everyday. Regardless of the weather, I ride my bike into Manhattan and to work. Today I got off work a bit later than usual. I checked the weather frequently because I knew it was going to rain and snow today. "Snow at 7:30".

As I got off work, it was raining and by the time I got to the bridge, it felt like there was a 5 degree drop in temperature. As I pulled up to my apartment, I noticed that my whole jacket was frozen. My pants weren't because they were moving, but my shoulder, sleeves, backpack, beard, everything was frozen. By the time I got the camera, most of it had melted. The rain hadn't even froze at that point!

Fixie Inc 5 Star

5star_1.jpg

Check out this belt-driven, wooden-rim rollin', stainless-steel constructed beauty of a bike. You know what? I dig it. All of it. Really nice! Throw a porteur rack on the front and you've got a perfect beer bike! Well, besides the tubies. I do wonder how easy it is to take off the rear wheel with the belt-drive and the couplers on the seat stay.

Still not convinced? Head over to their Gallery section to find...

Gaganho Home

family_house_by_Pedro_Gadanho_yatzer11.jpg

Fabrik Project just posted this project by the Portuguese architect Pedro Gaganho. I've seen Pedro's work before and his use of heavy geometric shapes is often at the building-scale. Some would think such a design approach would be clunky and out of place in a smaller space scaled for the everyday, but I think this is perfection. The proportions are scaled down in such a way that the geometries pull the occupant into the various programmed spaces.

Not just anyone could pull this off!

Kanye Wrecks his Cinelli

RIP.jpg

Just kidding.

This is what happens to your bike when it "mysteriously flies off the bikerack going down the highway" says Kevin from Texas. Pretty crazy. All that survived were the Knog lights! How's that Mr. Snob?

Get your GID on

photo-4.jpg

After I posted about the Stolen grips, a reader went to their site and saw that Stolen makes a glow-in-the-dark rimset.

Taking this as inspiration, Justin went and bought a can of Krylon Glowz paint. He then replaced the LED in the ever-so-popular Knog lights with a UV LED from a throwies project he had worked on before. After some patience and some adjusting, he came up with this.

The UV LED charges the GID paint as it spins. Pretty nifty. Keep us updated man!

Check this photo out. It was sniped from HKFixed by Tracko and now I'm re-posting for relevance.

NYC has a HUGE Frejus following. A lot of the old heads here used to and still do ride these bikes. My buddy Matthew has a beautiful chrome Frejus with Campy Inch Pitch and Cinelli components, which I've posted before.

This guy is lookin dapper as hell.

Forks!

Over the next few months, we'll be seeing a lot of fixed gear freestyle bikes. So far, the brands leading the, well, charge are Charge bikes, Volume Bikes, Brooklyn Machine Works and soon Milwaukee Bicycle Co. We're also seeing some experimentation across sees in Japan. The Starfuckers build has been discussed before. What I want to address are the different trick forks available now.

starforkers.jpg

We'll start with the Starfuckers fork. It's a throwback to the old BMX / flatland forks. Has enough clearance to barspin a 700c on their frame but I'm not sure whether or not it will barspin on other bike frames. Note the different drop outs for tricks or transportation. I have no idea how to or where to purchase one!

cutter-fork-1-2-767554.jpg

Next up is Volume Bikes. Volume has been making BMX framsets for about 10 years now and recently entered the Fixed Gear marketplace. Their frame, the Cutter is currently being ridden by Tom Mosher of Trick Track / Bootleg Sessions fame. They just released their fork, with a 420mm axle to crown length and 32mm rake. Volumes old fork for the Cutter was 377mm axle to crown with a 36mm rake for comparison. A notable difference in geometry. Not sure of their price.

revolver_lite.jpg

A similar fork is made by Black Market for rigid 26" mountain bikes. For comparison, the axle to crown on it is 435mm and a 33mm rake. There are ton of these rigid forks available.

3178157909_0ffa38fa67_b.jpg

All are around the same size. The unfortunate side effect of riding a rigid MTB fork is the trailing is affected on your bike, resulting in a major change in handling. These forks are around $150 - $200.

kinethic.jpg

If you just want to barspin and aren't concerned with durability, check out the Kinetic Keirin fork. Urban Velo recently did a write-up on it, but I wouldn't trust it to hold up as well as a unicrown fork. It's got 0 rake and a 395mm axel to crown length. Bottom line is, this will barspin any 700c wheel on just about any track bike.

6a00d8341d4cf253ef010536b9f1a8970c-800wi.jpg

Charge bikes recently acquired Tom La Marche from Brooklyn Machine Works with promise of a new frame production. The frame is top secret and only Super Ted and Tom will be riding them. I don't have pictures of the frame, but you can see the fork here on hesher fixed gear chick Juliet's bike. No idea on availability, rake or axle - crown length, but this fork looks like it fits rather well to a 700c wheel. Versus the Volume and BLKMRKT forks which has a little too much clearance for my taste.

Edit: Juliet and Andy both corrected me in the comments. The fork Juliet has on her bike is NOT the new Charge fork. It's the Nozzle. Thanks guys!

3185117733_76747152df.jpg

Last but not least is the new Milwaukee Bicycle Co's fork. It's been a long process, but ever since Milwaukee asked me to ride for them last year, they've been great with product design and have allowed me to give them feedback on a few products. This year before Interbike, Drew and I began designing a trick frame. It's still in production and will be released soon so details to follow, but I've been riding their fork for a few weeks now on my Gangsta track and it's a hell of a beast.

3185117469_3a64c50023.jpg

I Haven't ridden the other forks I've reviewed here, so my opinion is biased, but this fork is designed for the MKE bike's 74.5 HTA so the trailing did affect my Gangsta track. The Axel - crown length is 400mm and the rake is 32mm. The fork will also be available with 990 brake mounts, which are removable and will sport MKE's signature Stein. Price? Not sure either.

I hope this answers some of the many questions I receive from readers about what's available for tricks. All of these forks are designed for trick riding. I didn't review every product and I obviously left out 650c front wheels but some people are riding 26" / 650cs with the longer axle - crown forks...

Back when mustaches weren't ironic

3b08381r.jpg

The Library of Congress has some amazing photography that not only references how to properly build a path racer, but also how to grow an ironic mustache. Again, this isn't anything new, seeing as how these images have been available online for a while now, but sometimes it's just cool to see things come full circle. Even an elongated circle made by all-left turns.

Pure Norwegian Box Architecture

evfqewrbwrtnrht.jpg

Hailing from Oslo, Norway, Rintala Eggertsson Architects created this 19 square meter house. It is essentially living stripped to the minimal requirements. Smart living. Programmed living. The reason this project strikes me as beautiful is mostly because of the material choices. The exterior looks like Leviathan out of the Hellraiser movies and yet the inside is clad with a nice warm wood. The structure is also framed from wood.

dcveqve.jpg

Typically in the US and other countries when Architects create minimal dwellings such as this, the cold and harsh materials will continue to the interior, resulting in a house that feels more like a prison than a warm and welcoming home.

First seen at Dezeen and then redirected to Rintala Eggersson's homepage.

Shimano Oval

ewwerfrfg3rg.jpg

I was just browsing through the new products section over at Bens Cycle and I came across this beauty; Shimano's Oval Track chain. I'm not a huge fan of Shimano, but this thing is really nice. Love the links. Not sure what bike I'd put it on but it's a beaut! Price? $22!

Edit: I've been corrected. The chain is from Shimano's coasting line. People recently began riding them on their track bikes though.

Estonia's Pitted

macaframa_flyer2.jpg

Risto of Sahtel magazine in Estonia just shot me this email about this Macaframa premiere! It's awesome seeing people building up their scenes worldwide. Sahtel did an article a bit back on MASH where Jonathan Burkett blasted fixed gear tricks. Since then I haven't really seen any new issues here in the States. I happened to pick a copy of it up at Trackstar a while back and it's definitely a top-notch production. Are you guys expecting to release more issues to the US?

Anyway, enough rambling, here's the information!

Just wanted to give a shout that we will screen/premiere Macaframa in Tallinn, Estonia next Thursday 15th of Jan as part of Simpel Session Film Festival.

Simpel Session is an annual BMX and Skate street contest here in Tallinn Estonia. It's one of European biggest events of it's kind and considered as one of the best in the world by many.
Whole SS09 event will be also broadcasted live through Mpora.tv

Retro-Reflectivity

Cycling in the City is all about visibility and sometimes lights just don't do the trick. In response to this demand, a few companies have made it their duty to create "cycling friendly" clothing that still looks cool and doesn't make you look like the safety rangers.

Picturez%20025.jpg

Laek House recently re-upped their ELVS rims. You can read about the improvements here and keep watch for the new rims soon!

3158069976_2a2a6b9f1e.jpg

My man Zach over at Zlogblog just dropped some retro-reflective shirts as well! Check them out at his site and order them here.

wefcqwevqevbqwerb.jpg

Mishka also returned with their popular reflective Bear Mop shirts this season. We've been sending these out as alleycat prizes and to DART riders as of recent.

Of course there are more products out there that are fit for cyclists of all kinds to keep visible, I just thought these were great examples.

Horse Beats Boston's Ponies

Open Bicycle has a nice write-up on the recent Pony Up 2 race in Boston. Austin Horse took 1st, Kennedy took 2nd and Chabs took 3rd. NYC cleaned up and took all of Boston's money! Check out stats and a random pic of a naked dude here!

Bright Bike

Bright Bike from Michael Mandiberg on Vimeo.

One of the reasons why I like posting about an open-ended topic is the slew of emails I get from people in response to said topic. Check out Bright Bike!

Bright Bike is a Retroreflective Vinyl coated bike. It is like coating your bike with a big sticker that turns ultra-brite in headlights.

Right now we are in the prototyping stages, and hope to offer a DIY Kit soon. We just held a bike-wrapping workshop at Eyebeam's Holiday Hackshop (you can see the video at left) and it was a lot of fun. We also released an instructable, making it clear how anyone can wrap there bike. Check it out: Bright Bike Instructable.

The Basque Health Department Headquarters by Coll-Barreu Arquitects in Ensanche, New Town, Spain is really getting me hot and bothered. Not so much for the crystalline facade, but for the way they treated the stair shafts. Look at it! BRIGHT GREEN. Please please American Architects and Designers, loosen the color-phobia and if you have to keep everything monotone, at least liven up the stair halls! Color is your friend!

Pixel porn

wevqqebrtnbwetner.jpg

Jean-Yves Lemoigne is a French photographer who did an editorial piece on pornography and pixels. It looks like he built a 3d model of the girls out of 1" cubes and matched the lighting of the real scene with the digital scene through most likely a process known as camera-mapping.

Really nice.

Chari&Co Revisit

3195089669_12550ae09e.jpg

The word porn has been dropped a lot lately on this site and why stop there? I was out and about today on my lunch break. Working in NoLIta is awesome. I'm in between Trackstar, DQM, Chari&Co and the Brooklyn Banks. Just about everyday I head out on a nice hour long ride. Today I hung out at Chari&Co for a little bit and snapped a few shots.

These dudes have so much stock. It's insane. I'm like a kid in a candy store. If I needed anything at all for my retro Merckx, I'd look there first. Unfortunately, my days of collecting nice bike parts are numbered. My bikes are dialed in perfectly. Still though, these guys have some nice shit sitting around!

Super 7 x Lamour

3199195650_e27b0fa9e2_b.jpg

Joel's a busy guy. When he's not designing cabinetry for his shop in Long Island, he's either designing stickers, t-shirts, large skulls, painting huge naked girls and even making his own limited toy.

Check out this collaborative effort between Super 7 and his moniker Lamour Supreme. I never really dove into the Kaiju / Japanese limited toy collection game, partially because it's such an expensive hobby and frankly, my girlfriend would kill me if I spent anywhere near the amount of money on some of their price tags.

This however I think will be my first. Joel, lookin good man. Keep it up! and let me know when I can get one of these!

Hey Yous Guys

3197761805_e8600a7c35.jpg

One of my all-time favorite South Park episodes is when the boys head to a worldwide recorder concert and meet some NY'rs. The NY'rs are relentless, calling the boys queifs and rednecks. Anyway, it's random, but still a good watch. Catch it here if you missed the original airing back in '99.

I think this is what everyone thinks NY'rs are like. Which in some cases is probably true for the people who are born and raised here and not transplants. In general, I think NY'rs catch a bad rep.

Turbo Tabo

3207782704_7ae4fab1f9.jpg

Continuation of the previous posts I made about new old saddles. I just picked up a Soma Tabo from King Kog in Brooklyn. It's going on the MKE bike, which should be in this week hopefully! Mounted on my BMW currently is the Grunge saddle, which as you can see has split in the back from bailing on no-handed wheelies.

On top of those are a few of the old Turbos I have laying around. The top one was NOS a year ago. Took about 4 months to look like that. I'm really glad to see some companies making cheap[er] knock-offs. Really wish I hadn't trashed all those Turbos in the past!

The frame is about a 58cm square - compact geometry. Frame, fork, headset, seatpost / clamp only - he's also selling the wheels separately. Purple Level hubs + Purple Deep Vs.

Cannondale is SOLD!

From the looks of it, his Cannondale track bike is for sale too. You know, the blue ones? It's covered with street cred as well: small dings and stickers! I think it's a 56cm. Perfect beater!

Andy, you're going to get me in trouble with the misses if I post this and make a single comment about anything but the bike. So that being said, nice bike.

Edit: I almost forgot about this pic I took 2 years ago.

Antischism

Birlog.jpg

Now I'm not trying to steal the thunder from Jack over at No Gods No Vegetables, but I really want to share this album. I think this was one of the first legit Punk / Hardcore LPs I ever got. My parents were pretty strict about music; usually reading lyrics and such which led me to listening to bands either without lyrics or on ripped cassettes.

Antischism was a politically-charged band from the dirty south before it was called the dirty south. South Cak vegan straightedge! Anyway, check it out! It's a lot to digest, so check out the following tracks if you're ADD:

-Skream
-Elements(Of Oppression)
-The Fist
-Big Brother

Once and a while a deal comes that's too good to pass up. Some things have to move around a bit and in the end, I got a new project.

It's hard for me to find mass-produced steel frames in my size. I have really long legs when compared to my shorter torso. This Merckx was too good of bargain to ignore and should be a pretty nice build! More pics here.

It Has Begun NYC Edition

3214386846_97b70b0f64.jpg

Last week Tony got his Milwaukee Package in the mail and today mine arrived. A lot of great parts to go towards the new MKE 700cmx [not the official name of the bike]. Thomson bits, Chris King headset, toeclips!! [dimension clips are great btw], Twisted PCs, a new helmet [slick!] and some new Sugino 75s.

I can't wait to build up this bike. Should be here soon enough. Well, not soon enough, but hopefully next week?

Koolhand

rem1.jpg

Rem Koolhaas, the Dutch mastermind behind Office For Metropolitan Architecture has influenced many architecture students and practicioners over the years. He's the driving force behind internationally acclaimed masterpieces like the CCTV building, the Seattle Public Library and the Porto Concert Hall.

Now he's inspired a typeface. FWIS used Koohaas' Miesian typologies to create a typeface that's more representative of his work, rather than a usable type.

"‘koolhand’ is a new type face which takes its form from the architectural works of rem koolhaas.
the typeface is designed by fwis and art directed by chris papasadero. he is aiming to design a font
a day for the month of january and is posting them on his website. while the letters in ‘koolhand’
aren’t really designed for legibility, papasadero envisions them for textural treatments. "

Fixed Gear Fingerflip

3215729382_db9cf7a6fa.jpg

When Sexysushi was over here last fall, he rolled out to Peel Sessions and snapped a few pics. I noticed today that he just uploaded this one of Wilis doing a laydown frame hop. Stuff like this reminds me of Gonz's old video of him trying to kickflip a mountain bike. Anyone see that one?

This pic kinda looks like some throwback freestyle pic. Every time I see him do this, I cringe! My fat ass would snap my bike if I landed on it like this!

Edit: here's that video! Thanks Andrew!

ENOUGH!

shitshirt.png

Guys, come on! Seriously. What is it with people these days? If you didn't take a picture yourself, chances are, you shouldn't put it on a shirt unless you get clearance from the photographer. If you're making money off the clothing and you aren't paying the person who took the photo. SHAME ON YOU.

Support your local artists, support photographers, support local musicians! support your friends! Why are people always doing this kind of stuff? We're all a grassroots community still so why are people selling out their community?

Case in point.

Merge stole a photo from Mr. Zeta on Flickr and put it on a shirt which they're selling. Their legal disclaimers also claim that everything on their site is their property. I also see a John 3:16 drop on that page. Come on... seriously? Mr. Zeta did NOT give them permission either!

... showing people how it's done. Tonight at Peel was awesome. A bunch of people came out, new and old. Everyone was pulling great lines and ramping off each other's energy. Jeremiah and I were nailing stalls, barspins and airs to fakie on this bank. Every 6 or 7 tricks and it'd bottom out, sending the rider to their ass. It was like playing Jenga.

Snap! Delivery

3219802879_3f182f0b30.jpg

If you own a company in Brooklyn, NY and are always looking for a messenger service locally you probably can't find one. That's because there hasn't really been a Brooklyn-based messenger service. If you want a package picked up in Greenpoint and brought to Brooklyn Heights, you have to pay the Manhattan companies extra for going over the bridges.

Snap! is a delivery service based in Williamsburg that can and will deliver anything for you. They're a messenger-run and operated company, so you know you're supporting the little guys. They are equipped with a cargo-bike and multiple riders on-call.

Their rates are below:

2 hour service within Brooklyn, Queens, or Manhattan: $8 + $1 per mile from destination

1 hour rush service: $15 + $1 per mile from destination

45 minute Direct Rush service: $20+ $1 per mile from destination

Interborough Service over any bridge: $30 for 2 hour service, $40 for 1 hour service, $50 for 45 minute direct rush service

Oversized Packages (over 20 lbs): + $10

Skyway vs. Shift House

2009_01_skyway.jpg

A Minneapolis-based architecture firm City Desk Studio just put a Skyway up for sale on Craigslist. Via Curbed Via Greg.org.

2066846573_dcebd4dab3.jpg

Looking at this prefabricated beast reminds me a lot of my Thesis project completed back in 2004. It wasn't based on the idea of a private get-away as much as it was geared for a solution to Hurricane and Disaster-relief; specifically Hurricane Isabel-damaged Cape Hatteras. Remember, this was before Katrina and prior to the prefabricated design movement we have today.

My premise was that as long as we are inhabiting barrier islands in a permanent way, there will always be billions in property damage due to shifting tides and erosion. Not to mention Hurricane damage. In order to properly inhabit an island, we need a domicile that shifts with the context.

2066845239_6bce4f25f1.jpg

The Shift House's intent was to "lightly occupy" a coastal region based on a prefabricated infrastructural framework.

There's more to it than that, but its basically the premise. Seeing massive, transportable architecture really blows me away!

No, this isn't about a half - sober vagina. VAGX Urban Portable is a Korean company that is responding well to the ever-popular fixed gear portage demand. Their bags have great colorways, vinyl windows to display stickers and from what I can tell, look very similar to the SAG stuff.

MKE Prototypes are IN!

3235327376_f7c52edbc5.jpg

The frames just got in!

To test out the ride, Drew built it up with MKE polo cranks, some mini bars, brakes [front and rear] and some saddle just for the pictures. That is raw steel, no paint, so expect some COLOR! Keep in mind this is not my build, it's just to evaluate the bike's geometry.

I'm putting Thomson bits, 2" riders, SOMA Tabo, Sugino 75s and my Profile wheelset on mine. YES you can barspin with a front brake. YES there will be an option available without brake bosses and NO I do not know when they will be available for purchase.

Mine is going to paint tomorrow. Will post updates once it's in my hands!

Hugo SNAPS! in the NYTimes

26349491.JPG

Hugo from Snap! delivery was featured in the NYtime's fashion section today. The article was about reviewing the different brands of bike lights. Read up here and I've pasted the 1st page below.

AS more commuters ride bikes, more cyclists put themselves in danger. Should riding across the Williamsburg Bridge at night really be a deadly adventure sport? From 2007 to 2008, the New York City Department of Transportation recorded a 35 percent increase in the number of commuter cyclists, and an observational study released by Hunter College last fall found that the majority of city riders don’t obey safety rules.

While state law requires the use of white headlights and red taillights when riding between dusk and dawn, 45 percent of cycling fatalities in New York City still occur during low-light hours, according to Transportation Department statistics.

“It’s great that the number of cyclists in New York City has doubled over the past six years,” Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan said. “Since we have more riders on the street, it’s even more important that they share the roads, stay safe and be seen.”

Today, commuter cyclists have just as many options in bike lights as they do avenues down which to careen and curve—potentially unseen. But not every bike light is built to survive city riding, and if you intend to remove the flashers every time you slip into the office or stop for coffee, be forewarned that bigger isn’t always better, especially when it comes to convenience. Hugo Giron, a New York City courier and the founder of the Brooklyn-based bike-messenger service Snap Delivery, tested five sets of headlights and taillights during his 6 p.m. to midnight shifts.

Gettin a Chub for This One

BigRim.jpg

Jake posted a pic of his new wheel recently and Tracko posted it. Since then, I've seen it around on a few other sites, some people in the comments called the wheel a "hypebeast" build. You know what? FUCK YOU GUYS. This wheel is really beautiful. Something about the proportions. When I look at it, the first thing that draws my eyes are the near-parrallel spokes. The matte black definately helps. Now is this wheel "ideal for the streets?". I'd say sure. We all saw that H+Son explode a bit back and I know Chubs are mostly adhesive but this wheel is really baller.

I never understood why people hate on other people's sensibilities. Everyone wants nice-looking stuff and as long as this wheel is ridden, I don't see the point in hating it!
