My Milwaukee

7.jpg

Today I spent a good 6 hours riding the new Milwaukee Bicycle Co fixed gear. It's the most stable bike I've ever ridden. No rear triangle flex, no overlap and a solid front end makes it handle like a Beast. After I got over the initial shock of having a top tube again, I began to throw the bike around. The steep HTA [74.5°] and the longer top tube really increases maneuverability with spin tricks. 180s are easier and anything with a g-turn initiation feels much sharper.

We rode from Williamsburg over to Chinatown, down to DUMBO and further southwest to Red Hook. I rode all day, doing 180's hitting gaps and all the normal riding we go through and not once did I feel uncomfortable with its movements.

I'm sold. Seeing this project come to life has really made me stoked to ride! Still not sure on availability or pricing, so don't ask. Once I find out, I'll post the information.

Pics below and bigger here.

Pics from yesterday. We were all hung over from Affinity's party the night before but after we drug ourselves out of bed it was on! As I said before, the MKE bike really handles well for tricks and just riding. At no point on our ride yesterday did I feel like it was sluggish.

Note:

We will be taking pre-orders in 2-3 weeks, full details will be available here shortly.

Sizing: Long top-tubes mean short, stiff stems. So which size is right for you? First, measure your current cockpit (i.e. 54cm top-tube + 110mm stem = 65cm cockpit). The 50cm(S) frame has a 60cm virtual top-tube, so a 50mm stem would get your cockpit @ 65cm.

Keep in mind this frame is designed for 35-90mm stem lengths. It is better to have a shorter seat-tube than a top-tube that is too long.

Merckx Softspot

I have a thing for Eddy Merckx bikes. Track and Road. My admiration knows no bounds. Sure my Belgian white is pretty and my new Corsa Extra is wild, but my all time favorite team colors are the Stuttgarts and the Telekoms. Any coincidence that the Stuttgarts are the predecessor to the Telekoms?

MerckxCorsaExtra.jpg

Team Stuttgart became Team Telekom shortly after the original Stuttgart team bike was released.

If anyone has one of these two team colors in a 58 - 60cm - lemme know!

Pedals Plus People

3255716110_3866c95c82.jpg

I'm surprised there aren't more books about bikes and people. So far, my favorite is Fast Eddie's Bike Messenger's Life. Peter Sutherland's book that came with Pedal is also a good one. There was also one of the Seattle-based Fast Friday gang.

Julius from Orlando sent me information on Pedals Plus People, a book about a year's worth of bike events and people who attended them.

Supernaut

A while back I posted the Hutchinson ad that Daniel Leeb at Cinecycle worked on for the tire company. Alfred Bobe was the lead male role in the commercial and even though he's riding a Masi in it, he's been sponsored for 3 years by Tonic Fabrication.

You can see the bike in action in the 5 Boro Generals Monster Track DVD. The frames come in 6 sizes and are built for the streets. I spoke with Landon over a few email exchanges and got a sense for the company's background. He's got a new fork in the mix for the Supernaut, so keep an eye on their site!

MKE Barspin Clearance

3250556939_de48e56941.jpg

Enough people have asked me about this, so here it is; well the Large frame anyway. Also, an update on the weight of the frames.

S700 Fork (uncut steerer): 2.4lbs.

Surly Pacer Fork (uncut steerer): 2.2lbs. (for comparison)

S700 Small (will be slightly lighter with new geo): 5.9lbs.
S700 Medium (will be SLIGHTLY lighter with new geo): 6.1lbs.
S700 Large (will be SLIGHTLY slightly lighter with new geo): 6.2lbs.

Also, for comparison, a Surly Steamroller's weight (what I was riding before)

Frame 56cm = 4.5 lbs. (2.0 kg)
Fork - uncut =1.87 lbs. (0.85 kg)
Frameset = 6.37 lbs.

Not bad for a diesel - fixed gear! With two gussets! To prevent things like this.

Reappropriation

Interesting move at the 5:15 mark. No one is "inventing" anything on a fixed gear. They're just re-appropriating tricks. Really great video. Early freestyle.

I'm not saying that tricks on fixed gears are inappropriate, just clarifying that it's hard to claim "originality" with anything on a bike.

MOOF

cyml.jpg

The Dutch nail it again. When I was in Holland, I got to ride a few of the rentable cruiser bikes and was really blown away at the amount of bikes that were out on the streets at given moment. Rain or shine, people rode all the time. I was also blown away at all the bike parking. While all these bikes are locked up outside, why not soak up some Sun and put it to use?

Strida's MOOF was designed in Amsterdam and addresses this issue in a unique way. This bike has PV Cells on the top tube that power a front and rear light. Strida claims the two lights are for one to light the way and the other to make you visible from behind., making me believe that they'll be bright enough.

The through-top tube reminds me of the Dovetusai bike I posted a while back, only the MOOF has a downtube and looks like it'll hold up well as a legit commuter.

Nate's a Hater pt. 2

3271185916_e1209d1b0b.jpg

When I met first met Nate, he didn't like "East Coast Riding". He was into skids and rollouts. Ever since he's been coming out to Peel Sessions and riding on the weekend, he's slowly been saying he wants a trick bike. He rode Jeremiah's BMW and was amazed at how much fun it is to ride a bike meant for a beating.

3270374095_9565fa3fd0.jpg

Since getting my Milwaukee, we've been actively discussing the changes that will need to be made. I only had a few critiques of the large frame, but wanted some more critique on the small and mediums. Tony Fast is riding a small frame in Philly, but I wanted some local feedback.

I pulled a few strings, sold my soul and got Nate and Chris a prototype.

What seems like ages ago, I posted Independent Fabrication's winning submission to the Handmade Bicycle Show. Granted it was 2007, but I always say it's amazing how far this track bike culture has come in such a short time.

Open Bicycle just posted about Bodega's newest side-project, Fourth Wall.

What is Fourth Wall? Well check it out:

The Fourth Wall Project was created to enable artists to show multidisciplinary works in a span of several locations and capacities. Building on recent cultural endeavors in Paris, where unutilized developed spaces are temporarily transformed into galleries, cafes and community centers, The Fourth Wall Project seeks to create culturally relevant exhibitions all the while giving lifeless buildings the exhuberance of activity. We curate based on our neighborhood, socio-economic climate, excellence in craft and purity of execution. Through examining the artists’ daydream, we may see ourselves more clearly.

MKE Geo Update

S700%20Frame%20Update.jpg

After the initial release of the geometries, we got a ton of feedback and have addressed those concerns with a new prototype geometry. Bens Cycle has uploaded the new specs on their blog.

What we did was:
-shorten the seat tubes by approx. 2cm each on the Small and Mediums
-this lowered the stand-over and the TT length on the Small model
-we mirrored the BB gusset at the DT / HT
-fixed the wonky cable guides
-recessed the 990 mounts

I've ridden the bike for 2 weeks now and am looking forward to the new prototypes and eventually the production models!

Hopefully these new small prototypes will fit the smaller riders out there. Expect more notices as events warrant.

Friday the 13th

13thdfvsdvbserb.jpg

Don't go outside by yourself, don't have sex, don't get drunk and don't run upstairs. It's Friday the 13th today. There's just something about the original Friday the 13th movie poster that, even though it's an illustration, still puts shivers up my spine.

Destined to Fester

Fester.jpg

One of my favorite thrash / metal / skate artists, French did a few shirts for Mishka. These are only 3 of them and the rest fucking rule too. My favorite is definitely the Destined to Fester piece. Every time French has art for sale, I miss out on it. Now I can finally have a few of his illustrations!

No, You Suck

HELMETKIDS-Whtzoom1.jpg

This is what happens when I vent, to clarify, Ray and I exchanged emails and we've talked about the shirt. I can see his point and he sees mine. For the record, I do like Mighty Healthy's work, which is why this kinda annoyed me.

Karmaloop, the trendy streetwear online shop filled with tired-ass clothing has a shirt by trendy streetwear brand Mighty Healthy expressing how "over" a fad they never were a part of in the first place they are. Karmaloop has a history of wigger jocks venting about "fixies".

What's the matter dude, you fall off your bike trying to ride it? At the end of the day, you're STILL selling a shirt with a track bike on it. Hypocrites. Maybe if you were really into something because you liked it and not because it was or is a trend, you'd understand. It's like all the people who front off by saying "I was into it, before it was big". GOOD. Move onto your next obsession. The bike looks like an Affinity frameset too... Really hitting close to home clowns.

The Standby

the%20standby.jpg

Duncan from Montreal just shot me over an email describing a project he and his wife are working on called The Standby. He has the following to say about it:

It addresses such concerns as: lower back coverage,
a high collar to protect your face, a covered zipper to keep the wind out and my favorite is the
extra long sleeves with the thumb holes to protect your hands.. each sweater is hand made by me and my wife in our art studio so its coming from an ethical, community minded source and each one is a unique hand made piece.we're making them in 3 different colours, army green, black and red. the production versions will have reinforced elbows.

They look really great man and at $140 a pop for a handmade garment it'll sell really well too!

Here we go again!

Snobby, you've finally made it buddy. A little background on the author of the post too.

Timothy Walkiewicz is a Lower Manhattan Based Dustward Artist interested in riding his bicycle, drinking espresso, making and eating vegan food, and getting deep with his friends and family. Tim makes art about what things look like to him. His interests lie in the dialogue and character of people and objects both animate and inanimate in the city and in the recesses of the dustward. He works in a variety of mediums, feeling as comfortable creating and animating vector graphics as he does while brushing out detailed, water color illustrations. In his spare time he has been known to smash a block or two with tags. His work with video and cartooning is evolving daily creating a hectic unfolding Universe of motion, film, color, and sound.

Mishka for Gargamel

3286441689_f435cbac05.jpg

At the Many Many Many Many Mey opening I picked up a Gargamel toy that Mishka made for the show. Pretty great. Even though the colors are fucked up in my picture, it's supposed to be their seafoam and magenta pantones.

I'm not really into Kaiju, but I thought this was a special purchase.

Bermondsey Bike Store

bermondsey-bike-store-by-sarah-wigglesworth-architects-b1%20copy.jpg

How did I miss this? 76 bikes and a real piece of architectural design makes this bike storage facility a piece of work. Very simple, clean and more of an experiment with facade, fenestration and cladding rather than jumping through formal hoops. Well done!

Structure by Sarah Wigglesworth Architects and photos by Mark Hadden Photography.

Reissue Don't Rape

Concor with world champ stripes - late 80's - pic by me

Why San Marco? Why? Why would you bastardize one of the best saddles of all times? I mentioned a while back that San Marco reissued the Concor saddle, one of my all time favorites next to the Turbos and Unicanitors [which I saw at Interbike this year].

3287489271_9c857cd5c1.jpg
OG Concor Profil - late 80's - pic by Andy Temkin's Mom

I will admit, while I was initially really stoked on the re-issue, after seeing them in person, I'm kinda bummed. The classic Concor shows off its back end like a girl with a ton of confidence and a nice ass. It proudly displays its crisp and tight geometry. All the seams are pulled hard against the plastic shell. It's proud and it lasts for years without coming apart.

edvcqwefvqwbvewf.jpg
new Concors - look at the white leather's seams - pic by Chari & Co.

The new Concors look like NYC sewer rats chewed the leather out and then used their mucus to adhere it to the shell. Granted I haven't ridden one, so I can't speak of the quality of the new molds, but the craft is gone. Even if they are being hand made still, at least cut the leather out with a stamp! Or sharpen your scissors!

Please re-issue don't Rape!

Cinelli's Unicanitor re-issue is up next! As soon as I can find one.

Mishka and Empire in Ollie

efveqwrverqwgvbqwer.jpg

Mishka and Empire were featured in the new issue of Ollie magazine as part of the "NYC style". It looks like the article pits SF vs LA vs NYC with regards to style and bikes.

Pretty cool. I'm guessing that Ollie says NYC is just more metal and punk than the other cities?

What a Day!

3291942384_6a3dacb050.jpg

I was riding back from my lunch break today through Chinatown when an old lady stepped right out in front of me. It was one of those moments where you're going to hit the person and unfortunately, I did. I hit her and my wheel went sideways, flipping me over my bars and onto my shoulder. The woman fell down and hit her head. I made sure she was ok, called the police and made sure she was in good hands.

3291126641_d8d08fe7bb.jpg

Riding in a really dense city with tons of people popping out of cars everywhere is nerve-wracking at times. In all the years I've been riding, I've never hit a single person or car. I've had cars hit me, but in this case. I had the green light, was taking the inside lane and the woman just ran in front of me. Nothing I could do. We've all been there before. The cops even had the audacity to say that I saved her life. If I was a car, she would have died. There was a car directly behind me that luckily stopped a few feet behind me!

3291123091_1280946a5f.jpg

After I banged the wheel, I rode it to Affinity and picked up my Milwaukee; I just got my rear wheel re-laced by Miguel. Heading home, I bunny-hopped a pothole and SNAP. My bottom-bracket spindle snapped. I've had Miche products break before, but I've never sheared off a bottom bracket spindle. I rode a Campy BB for a year with the Stout, doing grinds and just riding hard in general. Never had a problem. Back to the Campy I guess!

3291938666_35e5790b39.jpg

Architecture, Art and Bikes

3302478390_770b70e02c.jpg

I don't need to point out the naked woman because this picture was already relevant to my interests. Great perspective, focal point and composition. Love the Architecture and the surrealist wall the cyclist is emerging from. Classic Cinelli ads are the best.

Not sure where I came across this, I did just see it on Milano Fixed and HK Fixed though.

Garret Chow Goes Down

Sixty Days

Sixty Days – Day 16 from glenn weatherson on Vimeo.

Tony shot me over to Zlog to check out this film project entitled Sixty Days. The artist, Glenn Weatherson is documenting his time spent on house arrest.

This is a new series where I will share my day while being stuck in an apartment on house arrest.

That’s right, I will be outside a total of 6 hours per week. Time to get real.

Pretty funny.

Rollout to Slow Roll

Yeah yeah yeah, I'll admit that I tried to watch this video this morning when I got to work, but when I saw the pogo in the opening scene, I closed the window. Don't let the skids or pogos hide the fact that this kid has some clean lines.

1:40 - wheel stall to rollout to slow roll

Clean! Like the curb endo pivot to full cab immediately following as well!

Hibagon

3301137136_c527acfef7.jpg

The hibagon is described as a black creature with white hands and large white feet, standing about five feet tall. It's also a metal band out of Brooklyn. Alex plays in it and they had their first show at 470 Flushing last weekend. It was epic. Really looking forward to that EP.

Yes, I know. The video sounds like shit. But at least you get a feel for it!

Dazzle

sdfvasdvdfgv.jpg

I've posted about Razzle camouflage multiple times in the past; 1,2 and 3 previous posts.

Now the RISD Fleet Library has an exhibition and lecture series on the WWI camouflage.

bfgnjhmtk.jpg

"Razzle dazzle" was a form of camouflage used by the US and UK during WWI. Its intent was to cause miscalculation in estimation of the ship's speed and direction. The visual rangefinders of the time were easily fooled by the contrasting and overlapping geometric patterns. The markings of such camouflage have since then made their way into different forms of artistic expression. Now I'm not sure that artists pulled from 'razzle dazzle' as a form of precedent, but the similarity is striking. Here is a beautiful image of such camouflage patterns. Unfortunately, there were no color images of these war ships.

Taliesen is one of Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpieces. Not as well known as Falling Water or Unity Temple, it's still a functioning design studio to this day. One of their current projects is their Mod.Fab. Modern prefabricated architecture just does something for me. Something about being able to move with your house and still live in style and comfort. Albeit Bauhaus "style"... but still

These look great. Interesting to see the use of the textured top. I can't wait to get my grubby little hands on one!

I've got an old Suede one I picked up NOS and a leather one that's on my Merckx currently. I had an older plastic shelled one a while back. For it being a plastic saddle, it was incredibly comfortable. Even compared to the bmx saddles of the time. Something about the shape just felt right for me.

Thanks to Tokyo Fixed Gear for the image.
