DQM x HUF for Incase Available now

DQM and HUF have been working on these bags with Incase for some time now. In recent weeks we've seen a few updates, including a HED3 logo representing the project. Incase just announced that the bags are available now.

I wanna see these in person!
Be sure to watch the video too.
Great job guys!
C.R.A.N.K. MOB'd

Hey girl, pass me that peanut butter wrench...
Even though the bike is upside down and she appears to have lost her pants climbing up on the roof with it, I have to post this picture. Not really sure what C.R.A.N.K. MOB is, but here's the rest of the photoshoot.

Chari and Co SALE!

Chari and Co are constantly getting in new stock. Literally, everyday they get in a grip of track bike goods. Their little space on Stanton is exploding with vintage and tech track gear.
This Friday and Saturday, get in on that product for a reduced price!
Denver Heads

If you live in or around Denver, head out to the Xrocksthespot anniversary party this weekend.

... then on April 11th, make sure to attend Artcrank, a poster show for bike people which made its way from Minneapolis to Denver.

Also make sure to catch the Macaframa premier on April 5th. It starts promptly at 5pm and is being played at 3Kings.
Go-Naut

Some more beautiful work from Argonaut Cycles. Even if the bike's not your thing, you have to admire it. What girl wouldn't want this bike?
And here's a little artsy short featuring one of their track bikes...

Tough Guy

Andy, the Track Cunt over at Fyxomatosis just posted a design for a new shirt he's producing next week. Made me laugh.
Look people, this is what real track racers look like!
The real reason why I posted this is because of a recent event that made my day. I was ghost-riding my Milwaukee over to Affinity to replace my bottom bracket. There aren't that many bike lanes in the neighborhood and a lot of the drivers around here hate any inconvenience in the form of two wheels, much less two wheels pushing another set of wheels alongside it, so I took some back roads to a nearby bike lane en route to the shop. As I'm going the right way down the block, a kid riding a track bike no-handed while talking on his phone is coming at me, going the wrong way, in the bike lane. As I squeeze by, he says to me "outta the way meat head"...
Now if only I had been wearing this shirt...

Oh hell yeah! Definitely checking this out on Sunday.
Finishing Touches

Final touch for my Merckx Corsa Extra. I've got all the parts, just waiting on the bottom bracket. It's building up nicely.
Rapha in the NY Times

Well if the NYC wealthy haven't heard of Rapha before, they sure have now. The NY Times has been covering cycling a lot recently and now there's an article on cycling wear that stabs at Central Park roadies and their parade-esque kits; pointing out other, classier outfits for City bikers.
They even got a quote from Snob!
In an e-mail message, Bike Snob NYC said he was impressed with a “Fixed Jacket” that Rapha sent him to try. “It’s excellent,” he wrote. “It’s durable, the fit is good, and the pockets are in the right places.” The blogger added, “They’ve done a great job of not only evoking cycling history but also capturing a ‘soulful’ aesthetic that appeals to certain riders.” Still, he admitted: “As a cyclist, I understand it, but personally I sometimes find it off-putting. It’s a little rarefied for me ... I don’t want to feel like I need to be worthy of my clothes.”
The Fixed Jacket is indeed a nice garment. But I'll stick with this...

Subrosa Fixed?

I know this is a bit dated but is this a trick bike or TRACK bike? Who knows?...
Most companies are getting into this because it's a hot market but their bikes are prancing the line of track machine and trick machine. Geometry is a bitch to work out and as we've seen before, the tendency is to go for a parallel geometry, which makes for a horrible street and trick ride.
Which one is it? Hard to tell as of now. Subrosa has some pics up now on their site, so head over and checkem out.

Open Update
Open is opening officially on April 11th in Boston. This is a big move for Zach and Josh and Regardless of the negative connotations with 'track boutiques' in major metropolitan areas, Open Bicycle is striving to fill a niche market.
How do you shake such connotations? You open a shop that focuses on the bicycle as a form of transportation and a work of art. Make a spot where people will want to hang out and learn about bikes, not just a shop where you feel unwelcome. It's really important for a local bike scene to have a shop where you're welcome to ask questions, work on your bike and soak in some of the knowledge.
Here in Brooklyn, Affinity has filled that niche and in Boston, Open is attempting to fill the same demand.
Open is also supporting the local art scene in Boston by forming the Chorus Gallery and Superbe Design. They'll have different galley events and art openings throughout the year.

This isn't a track bike boutique. Open also carries a line of internal 2 and 3 speed townies bikes a la townie bars, fenders and coaster brakes. Need a different kind of ride in your life? Talk to the guys there and they'll help you out.

Keep Watch next week for future updates as events warrant. OPENing is April 11th!

I'm stoked for the guys. Build-out looks great.

Disrupt - The Bass Has Left the Building

Like Foundation Bit, the new release from Disrupt [does he have a Myspace?], the Bass Has Left the Building features sci-fi blips, distorted robotic voices, elegant and playful bass beats and distorted drops / peaks in tempo. When I picked up Foundation Bit last year, it took me a bit to fully enjoy it for what it is. After a few listens, it really grew on me. Not sure if it was the sound clips from Alien [Ash's last words] or the constant changes and shifts in sound. Regardless, the Bass Has Left the Building reads as a continuation from Foundation Bit, so if you like Disrupt's earlier work, definitely check this out.
Head over to Last.fm to listen to the whole album for free.

Pop Off

Let's rewind it a bit to the post I made about Devotion's MB-1 bike. Remember the cork hanging from the saddle rails? Well, here's the explanation:
I'll leave it up to Ted Ernst, a former 6-day racer, fixture of the So-Cal racing scene and encyclopedia of American racing in the days of yore.
"Cycling Lore From Days Of Yore:
In days of old, when bike riders were bold,
and a fixed gear was all they'd need,
with lots of torque they attached a cork,
and rode away with speed.
Corks in cycling vernacular date back at least to the 1920's, probably
originating at the steeply banked wood track indoor 6-day bike races.
During the halcyon years of cycling in the tens, twenties, and thirties,
trackside at the 6-day race was one of the places where the social set went
to be seen. Sitting next to the action at their infield tables, it was
chic for the "swells" to sip champagne and dine while giving the track
stewards money for sprint laps to liven up the racing activity. The
speedy, smooth muscular shaved legs, whirling wheels, sparkling sprockets
and the sensuous aroma of the various rub down lotions had more than a few
femme fatales asking about and turning an eye or ankle to the studly, er
sturdy bike racers.
Soon the jargon evolved. When a cork was popped, power was released.
Bubbles escaped, the elixir went flat, no more "oomph" or energy. So,
dropping your cork or having no more cork means you're out of it, flat,
dead, pooped, no more stuff. Ergo, the racers would hang a cork on their
bikes so they'd never be "out" of cork. There would always be one more
effort left for a "jam" or sprint.
Conversely, if a rider said he "uncorked" a sprint, well, he "jumped",
"wound it up", and took off. Or, if he pulled their corks, he went so hard
that the opposition got "dropped", "shook off" and had no more cork left.
They were decimated. HAH! Great Fun!
Commercially, bar plugs were not yet in standard production. In spills,
riders could easily get gouged by the edges of the handlebar and stem
tubes. Ouch! Instead of just taping over the openings, our friendly cork
came to the rescue! Corks were filed and/or sanded, inserted into the
openings, and often painted to match the rider's bike or team colors. The
corks were also used to plug the bottom of the fork crown. Dirt and
moisture were kept out. Light, inexpensive, and effective."
A subtle reminder that no matter how tired you think you are, you've always got a little cork left!
Can't be a wine cork though...Gotta be effervescent like Champagne or something.

Chukker

After all the trouble I had looking for rims that held up to the kinds of abuse we're putting on them, Velocity has answered the call.
My Deep Vs have been through hell and somehow, they're still rolling. The only problem is, they aren't wide enough for wider tires. A 35c rolls off the bead with no hesitation. Now, with the Chukker, it looks like I'll be able to run even bigger tires.
Good job guys!

Now the real test is if they'll hold up for Wonka... Every other spoke on his rear wheel has stress fractures like this, indicating rotation and pressure given on the same side. Pretty impressive. I've never seen this before. Even on mine. But then again, I'm not 180 bunnyhopping 7 stairs.

Backpacks...

Rapha's Fixed Backpack
I can't wear messenger bags for a number of reasons. Mostly because I'm not a messenger and I don't need a massive shoulder bag to carry what I take with me on the daily commute. Also because resting all that weight on one side of my body results in reoccurring pain in my neck and shoulder.
It'd be nice if I didn't have to ever wear a bag, but with all the crap I have to carry around with me on weekend rides, it's necessary.

Rapha's Fixed Backpack
A few weeks ago I was on the search for a backpack that was smaller than my big messenger backpack and easy to access. The thing that sucks about the deeper bags is that shit is always getting lost inside. A back or side access is key!
That being said, Rapha has introduced their Fixed Backpack.
Check out a few shots here, including details. Since it's Rapha, the quality will be impeccable and well worth the $200 price tag. But what if you don't have $200 to spend?

Manhattan Portage's Ballistic Backpack
Here was my solution to the smaller backpack problem; the Manhattan Portage Ballistic Backpack.
What first struck me as awesome about this bag was the general shape. It's not a typical schoolhouse Jansport like their other backpacks. It's been designed by someone who knows what they're doing.

Manhattan Portage's Ballistic Backpack
It's got a large encompassing flap that covers the top. A number of pockets, access from the side and is treated to be water-resistant. I've been caught in enough rainstorms to vouch for it's water-resistance. Keep in mind though, it's not a messenger backpack, so I'm sure if you're outside all day in the rain, it'll leak. Then again, messengers usually need more space than 2500 cubic inches!
Bottom line, if you're looking for a good backpack under $100 with details that work for most commuters, check it out!
[yes I paid for mine too - including NYC tax. It's well worth it!]

All City 130 BCD Rings

All City keeps cranking out the essentials for Urban fixed gear / track bike riders. Some words from Jeff at All City regarding his new 130 BCD Chainrings:
They come in 42, 43, 46, and 47 teeth. Are made from the same 7000 series alloy as our 612 rings, are strong as heck, and best of all cost about half of what other “messenger” rings cost. If you’ve been wanting a new ring for your 130BCD crankset but didn’t want to spend more than the arms cost for a new ring, these lovelies are the answer.

Chukker Update

I have to admit, I'm impressed with Velocity. They contacted me while back about their B43 and we spoke a bit about a trick rim. Through our correspondence, they determined there was a market for a wider Deep V and a deeper Deep V.
A few days later, I got an email saying they wanted to send me a prototype Chukker. I Fedex'd them my hubs and 2 days later, I have a new wheelset all laced up. Not that there was anything wrong with the G6000s I was riding, but the curiosity set in. So now I'm riding these rims. They look beefy as fuck. Great profile, great shape and feel solid. Basically, they're wider Deep Vs. I'm gonna ride them for a bit and keep everyone updated.
Sorry for the shitty pic! Will update later on.
Yes, that's a 38c tire on the front.
Mongolion

Joel is the man. I met him through the NYC Fixed Gear scene after seeing his artwork everywhere. Eventually I introduced him to Mike and Greg at Mishka and since then, he's done literally oodles of projects with them. From a giant Cyco Simon head, to a Boogieman and now he's showcasing his latest design at their retail shop this Friday at 7pm.
The Mongolion has been posted here before and here's its final incarnation. Pretty impressive man!

Cellular Walls

I've been looking into more and more modern-day track builds as of recently. It seems like a level of precision and craft has been achieved as of late due to the growing trend in track bikes. It makes you wonder, would these guys be pushing the aesthetic envelope like this if track bikes weren't so popular? This track end reminds me of a cell wall found in plant cells. Nicely done.

Billboard Housing

Because people asked for it...

There are more images than these two, including process images, models and drawings but this is all I have at the moment to upload. The overall premise for the project was to reuse billboard structures to accept student housing modules. These modules would line the electric light rail in low-density cities like Charlotte, NC and other cities who realized that light rail trains are the answer for mass-transit.
In major cities with elevated trains, like Chicago and NYC, billboards line the tracks, offering prime advertising spaces. Most of the structures in dense cities are above existing structures. In cities of suburban America, there isn't the infrastructural density, so most urban planners align public transit in dead zones.

These housing modules would line the low-density rail, adjacent to the new "university" and students would be able to lease-out advertisement spaces, while living there, subsidizing their housing costs.
It's a far-fetched idea, but the notion was that the modules would then begin to infill within the urban fabric...
I completed this project in 2003. It also included a complex pattern language for the overall infill within an urban area. I'll have to spend some time pulling everything else together. The renderings are really dated too...

Beginning on May 16th, 2009 we will be touring eastern cities, starting in Toronto then heading to Montreal and finally arriving in the Big Apple. We aim to reveal the riding and culture that exists within each one of these amazing cities. Filming is also underway in Vancouver where the locals have been pushing hard to lay down some of the best lines ever seen on a fixed gear.

Trick Bike?

This is a radball, or bikeball bike. Everything about the design of this bike denotes its use. It's got a relaxed headtube angle, a 1:1 gear ratio, a tight rear end with the saddle cantilevered over the wheel, platform pedals and high bars. This bike is meant to whack a soccer ball with the front wheel into a goal while other opponents play defense.

This is an artistic cycling bike. It looks very much like a track bike, sans the 0 degree stem and large back-swept handle bars. Like the radball bike, this bike also supports a 1:1 gear ratio. They look very similar in geometry in fact, except for the seat tube angle and saddle, which is traditionally inserted into the seat tube, versus the top tube. This bike is meant to be ridden in auditoriums where one or more rider performs synchronized, ballet-like manuevers.

This is the Starfuckers Zenon frame. What makes this different than other Starfucker builds is the use of a 26" wheelset. The rider now, along with the slack head tube able, has 0 overlap for barspins like the previous two bikes. In fact, if the rear wheel were to be tighter to the bottom-bracket, this bike would wheelie like a Schwinn Stingray. Note the same flat pedals but a different saddle and a more traditional track bike gearing. Now, this bike is most likely ridden around a city like Tokyo where the rider engages in the new 'trick' movement called 'fixed gear freestyle'. We're all aware of this, so I'll spare everyone further explanation.
There are a few variations on what these freestyle fixed gear trick bikes look like. You've seen the Charge Scissor, the Milwaukee Bruiser, the Volume Cutter, the BMW Gangsta tracks and others. What differentiates these bikes from a radball or artistic cycling bikes is their ability to cover great distances in a short time. I've seen a lot of set ups that make tricks easier; BMX race bars, low gearing and platform pedals are a few. But what about the one thing that separates these fixed gear trick bikes from the rest?
I'm not saying I oppose the set ups people are riding. In the end, people are riding their bikes, which is all that matters. I'm just wondering what these bikes will end up looking like in 2 years. Will people be merging into artistic cycling styled bikes? Or will the BMX approach take over?
What's your opinion on the subject? What kind of riding do you do and what kind of set up do you have on your bike?
I'm interested in your opinion, so link pics to your 'trick' bike and explain yourself!
Wired, this Editorial is Tired

Come on now. You guys are usually on top of your game. Wired's recent editorial on "fixie fashion" is about 2 years behind the likes of Bike Snob NYC and other hatertorial blogs.
Email Mr. Charlie Sorrel and call him out on it!
Weak!
Julius just informed me that Charlie wrote a follow-up today...
The Town

If you're in Minneapolis around the first of May, make sure to swing through the One on One Studio and see Stevil's gallery show. I went to see his work at Invisible last fall and it's something you outta not miss!
The Dutch Bicycle

When I was in Holland, I rented one of these Dutch bikes. Everyone rode them. Guys would give their girlfriends rides as they sat on the rear luggage racks, people carted around groceries, moms took their kids on bike rides. The Dutch bicycle was a way of life.
The NYTimes has once again used bicycles as inspiration for a fashion editorial entitled the Dutch Bicycle.
Check out these $3,000 outfits!
Andel Track Cranks

These new Andel track cranks look like a less expensive version of the Omniums I'm riding. They also come in black! I think Outboard BBs systems with big, thick-ass axles may be what we're looking for. They also have a proper track Q-Factor.
Suggested retail should be about $160
Edit:

Milwaukee just got these in stock. No branding and $164!

Book of Black Earth Lands in Brooklyn

What most people don't know about Actual Pain creator TJ Cowgill is that he is also in a brutal metal band. Book of Black Earth stormed into the metal scene in Seattle a bit back with the Feast and their second album, Horoskopus is a worthy follow-up.

They played Union Pool tonight so I headed over after Peel Sessions. Great show and I forgot my earplugs so I'm sure my ears will be ringing well into tomorrow!
If you like what you hear on their Myspace, head over to your local CD shop and buy Horoskopus! It's hard to get excited about a lot of the metal that's coming out now, but this album will not disappoint you.
... oh and TJ informed me that Fenriz is doing a mixtape for them. Who's Fenriz? Well, if you have to ask, then...
Supercorsa in Stock at DQM

I just got a pair. They look pretty great for summer rides. I wouldn't wear them everyday but a good Sunday ride shoe for clips and straps. Better than looking for a size 12 vintage cycling shoe on ebay!

Exploded Axons
I've been looking around for some parts that were missing on a Campagnolo Contax headset I have; the o-ring seal that nests on the crown race. After a short discussion on the NYC Boards, Jeremy, who runs Tears4Gears and cracked the Merckx serial number index posted the above image to clarify which part I needed.
I did a ton of exploded assemblage diagrams in Architecture school and something about them makes me wish I was still hand drafting again. Click the image for the full resolution.

Corima x 10 Deep
10 Deep seems to now be into cycling. Or at least the imagery associated with the fixed gear trend.
From the exclusive Arkitip preview they state:
"While other brands are concentrating on a fixed-gear specific theme, 10.Deep paints with a broader stroke, drawing more on the fashion of New York City bike messengers in the late 80s and early 90s."
and furthermore stating that...
"As a result, none of the pieces in the collection feature coordinating colors or matching styles to preserve the messenger aesthetic."

Outlier Merino Wool Hoodie Preorder
Outlier just launched their Merino Wool preorder. You know the drill by now. Hand made in NYC from premium merino wool, which is more environmentally friendly than cashmere and wont stink like hell after you wear it day after day after day.
Read up on the fit below:
The cut is lean and minimal, long raglan sleeves give a full range of motion when riding. The back is extended to keep you covered when riding and the large three panel hood can be worn over a helmet. The fabric is 95% superfine merino wool, with a small amount of nylon mixed in for added durability. Available in Black, Charcoal Gray, Rich Blue, Light Gray and Army Green. Made in NYC. Ships late April / early May. Limited edition, 15 per color only.
and head over to the site for nice, full-res imagery.
Milwaukee Cream City
So I finally got around to building the Cream City track bike up. I had enough spare parts around that the build came out pretty classy. The wheelset was borrowed from my Merckx for the pic and will be replaced by a Profile and Velocity wheelset this week hopefully.
Build so far:
-60cm Cream City frame and fork hand-built by Waterford in the US
-Phil HF SLR 36h 3x to Mavic OP CDs [front wheel is trashed still]
-Campy Record Cranks, Bottom bracket and NRecord Pista 49t ring
-MKS pedals / Dimension plastic clips / Toshi doubles
-C-Record Seatpost
-C-Record / Chorus headset [Contax model, no greaseport drillings]
-Cinelli Unicanitor [Old shell] - ripped off the torn up buffalo leather
-Cinelli 1a stem + pos risers / stolen grips
Haven't really ridden it all that much. Since it's raining, but it's very similar to my Merckx's geometry.

Vans Supercorsa Fall 2009
Aside from keeping some of the same nuanced details, the next version of the Vans Vault Supercorsa doesn't really look like the last version. Sure, the Italian-flag Vans tag is there, but the stylings aren't the same. The new models use a leather weave on the sides which will no doubt be a bit thicker than the current model.
3 models are slated for release this Fall. Each bearing a different flag; Italian, French and Irish. Really liking the new model and I hope Vans continues to use cycling shoes as precedents for the Supercorsa model. I think I'm leaning more towards the French colorway. White leather will look awesome after a few weeks.

"Laser"
Leonardo Manavella has invented a new product to bring cyclist-hating automobile drivers to their knees in death-gripping pain!
Just kidding. He has however invented another form of bicycle safety that creates a safety zone around the cyclist not only alerting drivers of the cyclist, but also alerting the cyclist when a vehicle enters his zone through a series of horns.
It's interesting, but I'm not sure of being very practical. Who wants flashing lights and sirens when a car passes too close to you? Nothing will teach drivers about respect for cyclists until they are behind the handlebars of a bike themselves.
Read more about it here, over at Ecofriend.
Chukker Update
Velocity just informed me that the Chukkers will be available in limited quantities around the end of May. Sorry to say 'limited' on a bike blog, but that's the truth!
I'm sure they'll go into full-speed production shortly after. Mine's held up great. No complaints! For what it's worth, I'm riding Profile hubs laced 4x with butted spokes. The argument with the butted spokes is that the butted ends absorb the shock, not the rim.
Again, wheel lacing arguments are as old as anything in the cycling world, but that paired with 35c and larger tires seems to hold up quit well. I weigh over 200 lbs too.

In all honesty, especially in this freakishly early warm weather we've been having, I'm over cotton. I've been wearing merino boxers and the Outlier merino wool shirt as much as possible lately.
Wool doesn't always mean itchy, scratchy and hot. Merino breathes better than cotton and due to its wicking nature, keeps you cooler when it's hot out.

Corbusier and the Occult

When I was in high school, I did a report on DC's urban plan for my AP US History class. After I began researching, I discovered the theory of Masonic influence with the city plan of the District of Columbia. Pentagrams, right angles, the occult...
This was one of the reasons that Architecture school appealed to me and while in my first semester, I began to admire Le Corbusier's work. There's no mistaken the influence his designs have had on my understanding and execution of architecture. But was Corbusier influenced by the occult as well?

A new book by J. K. Birksted entitled, Corbusier and the Occult delves into this notion...
Read below:
"Hidden sources and ambiguous inspirations abound in the work of famous, highly influential architect Le Corbusier, who reinvented himself in his thirties, mythologizing much of his history. This book takes a robust, unblinking look at the blanks in need of filling, covering "as much about the secret sources of Le Corbusier's architecture-that is, of what he threw away and did not want us to know-as it is about modernist relations to history." As a child, Le Courbusier (then Charles-Édouard Jeanneret) was immersed in Masonic thought (a big part of social life in his Swiss hometown), which elevates the right angle as a symbol of righteousness and life. Le Corbusier's inspiration by, and celebration of, the right angle is a major theme; he referred to his own Poem of the Right Angle representing "not only the foundation of my being but also... of my architecture and of my art." UK scholar Birksted unpacks a wide range of philosophical and aesthetic meanings resonating through Le Courbusier's work. Though it deepens the scholarship considerably, the exhaustive study's meandering narrative makes the material more than a little confusing. Still, the bold connections he makes should hold the interest of art and architecture fans."

I've done big drops onto it, slammed it, crushed it and generally thrashed mine for a while and it's still alive and kicking. Rough surfaces will obviously wear it down faster, so stick to marble, metal and granite.
Take note, it won't work with oversized chains like the Wippermans. A KMC chain works great though.
