Enough With the Concept Bikes

I’m kinda sick of all these Maya / Solidworks rendered concept bikes that are for “urban” use. Apologies to Chris Boardman since as far as I can tell, he hasn’t pitched it as one, but there are a fair share of ID projects that showcase some mystery-material bike boasting of “awesomeness” that lack fenders, racks and other things that make “urban” bikes, well urban.

This concept bike is obviously not a race-only bike because Boardman says it’s “Impossible to steal…“; who locks up their race bike? I’m guessing it does imply an urban application. Impossible to steal though? You don’t ride much in NYC do you?

I’d be more keen to see someone design a solid bike for under $200 for Urban use. There’s a challenge for you industrial-designers. No finger-print scanning devices required please.

Can I send it to get a six pack of beer?

I am surprised he didn’t opt for the anti-gravitational field rather than the puncture-proof self-inflating tire system.

I agree with the concept bikes…
sub 200 bucks is a better challange for a designer, and maybe try integrating some useful tech like low power long lasting gps tracking device- maybe we could be done with locks altogether if we smarten up about networking and registration to be able to track your own bike forever– the way i see it is if someone from cadillac can call you if you get in an accident maybe we can use global positioning for something to do with bikes other than mounting a mini computer on your handlebars to distract you from the real reason to ride a bike in the first place

Does the Light Cycle area from “Tron” count as an urban environment. Because this thing would be great there.

it’s like that design a better bike rack contest where most of the finalist designs were 100x worse than the existing bike racks!

I totally agree. I’m sick of these futuristic urban assault bikes that will never get made and don’t have any real world uses.
