This week's Merckx Mondays comes from the Swiss website, Speedbicycles. If you haven't been to their site before, do check it out. It's a virtual museum loaded with gorgeous rides.
It was too easy to pick the top Merckx from their stable, a 1992 Motorola cycling team pro bike, ridden by Andy Hampsten in the 1992 Tour de France Alpe d'Huez course.
Details below:
1992 TdF stage (Sestriere-L'Alpe d'Huez) winning bike of Andy Hampsten (USA), Motorola Cycling team. Frame #7821 with Columbus TSX tubing in Motorola Cycling Team livree. Equipped with 8-speed Shimano Dura Ace, Cinelli bar/stem Avocet Titanium saddle, Look clipless pedals, Ambrosio Durex clincher rims and Specialized Turbo/C tires. Avocet computer.

That is nothing short of a gorgeous bike, a really great site to. Going to go get lost in it for a while now.

what a great bike. I have a 91 motorola team bike that I found in great, but not mint condition. It rides like a dream, possibly the most comfortable road bike I have ever ridden.
Thanks for putting that up!

I just wasted way too much time on that site! I need another project bike, and some more free Campy stuff.

I call bullshit. Andy Hampsten famously used a downtube front shifter and an STI rear brifter for weight savings. It's a Moto team bike but not THAT one with that set-up.

Also, the bike is Reynolds 753, you can tell from the bullet seatstay caps. Apparently Eddy built the team mountain stage bikes out of 753 but put TSX stickers to appease Columbus, the tubing sponsor. I don't know why Eddy didn't use Columbus' superlight EL tubing instead.

Just to note, my SLX Concorde PDM has "bullet" seat stay caps that look nearly identical, but I'm not surprised if the bike is 753. Many pro bikes from the late 80's and early 90's were made by custom builders and painted to satisfy the sponsors/team, not to mention all of the Olympic bikes built by Tiemeyer and Yamaguchi. Here's a link about Andy Hampsten's "Huffy" being built by John Slawta instead of Serotta
