Chris King: Introducing the I8 Headset for Argonaut Cycles

This is just the beginning of a project I’m documenting with Chris King and Argonaut Cycles. We’ll start off with something extra special, the Chris King I8 headset. Here’s the latest from Chris King:

“The Chris King I8 headset was developed for 1-1/8″ to 1-1/4″ tapered steerer tubes that are quickly becoming the standard for performance oriented road and cyclocross bicycles. We worked with locally produced Argonaut Cycles to develop a headset with seamless visual design that will elegantly interface with the head tubes found on modern carbon bicycles. In doing so we invested the I8 with the same precision performance and durability that is built into each and every Chris King component.

Carbon frames are most definitely here to stay and we wanted to make sure that our riders had the option of a Chris King headset for their future dream bike. A headset that avoids the deleterious wear effects that occur with the use of integrated headset designs.”

I can’t wait to share more of this exciting project with you! Expect much more to come… For now, head to the Argonaut Facebook and await updates!

Are you an engineer working on the project or do you just work with the engineers?

Not an engineer. Just documenting the project…

john’s just doing what he does best. he’s no engineer TMK but he does a hell of a job as a media outlet covering new projects from small companies. that’s work the last i checked.

I’m an engineer working on the project.

He is educating consumers, who will in turn expect higher quality goods from manufacturers.  Feeding the fire that is innovation.

Just to be clear, this IS or IS NOT an integrated headset?

    • Guest

It’s made for 1 1/2 to 1 1/8 tapered forks, The top works as a Zero Stack headset the bottom is a massive external cut 1 1/2 headset. This has been around for a while now.
And that Argonaut road bike is nothing special. It’s all Deda Ccai tubes put together at the joints. I would have painted it so the joint at the downtube is not so evident.

That Argonaut is far from Deda tubing. It’s all formed in Washington state and is 100% proprietary.

        • http://www.argonautcycles.com/ Ben

This is Ben from Argonaut, and I’m very proud to say that I am not using Dedacciai tubes.  I’m aware of those you’re talking about.  Most American custom carbon builders are using ENVE tubes with Dedacciai rear ends.  The Z115 is a popular one that Crumpton uses on a lot of his frames.

All of the Argonaut frame parts are manufactured in White Salmon, WA, by ICE Composites using bladder molded frame parts, or parts that are formed on a latex bladder and cured in an aluminum mold under a heat press.  ICE has made tubes for Trek, Guru, and IF in the past, but now works exclusively with Argonaut.

The new I8 is a headset I designed with Chris King that will carry a 1.25″-1.125″ tapered steerer inside a head tube with a 44mm ID.  I wanted to build my frame with a 44mm ID so that customers would have the freedom to run zero stack internal headsets, 1.25″-1.125″ tapered, or 1.5″-1.125″ tapered. I feel the 1.25″ taper is the ideal balance in increased head tube lateral stiffness and better braking performance without feeling too harsh, which is the case with a lot of 1.5″ tapered forks.

            Boom.

When will the headset be available for sale?

    whats wrong with integrated headsets?

  • Ryan

We knew KING would give in eventually to integrated headsets. They have rebelled for so many years, but this is a step in the right direction.
