TyK Calender 2010

Alexis of Thought You Knew sent me some information on their forthcoming TyK Calender for 2010. The calender features Ladies PinUps and Men's SuperHeroes as the theme and gets pretty creative as you can see from these teaser pics.

All proceeds of the sales go to support the Sadie Hawkins Style Ride via Chicago Women's Health Center. More info here.

Harry, the man behind the NY Bike Jumble and the provider of content for Tears for Gears as of late is selling a beautiful 57cm Cimatti Campagnolo Cambio Corsa 1940's road bike on eBay. This is pure sex on two wheels. If vintage (read, 60 years old) roadies are your thing, check it out!

It ends in less than a day, so you can probably get a good deal on it! Like what you see? Check out the full gallery here!

Arik Roper: Hidden Dimension

Arik Roper: Hidden Dimension

hdflyer3.jpg

Arik Roper is the man. His work has blessed many album covers from many many great bands over the years; Sleep and High on Fire are just a few. He's having an opening event at Fuse Gallery this weekend. Here's a few of the pieces that will be on display. I'll be there!

Brimming with delicate, surreal imagery, Arik Roper’s The Hidden Dimension examines alternate states of being that exist within and beyond everyday awareness. These realms unfold as everyday consciousness is interrupted through dreams or other capacities. Exploring these transcendent elements, Roper’s paintings and drawings feature epic landscapes of the mind, natural artifacts from the past and future and other cerebral peculiarities.

Mishka 2010 Calender Party Thursday

With last year's calender a huge success, Mishka asked Ellen Stagg to come back to shoot the 2010 calender. It's available for pre-order now and this Thursday is the official opening party at their store on 350 Broadway in Brooklyn. I'll be there early before Peel Sessions, so be sure to swing through!

I mentioned this earlier today and figured I'd post it up. Milwaukee is now making the Stout chainring guards in blackened steel. Steel will last longer and grind on more surfaces. It's gonna spark like hell too! The machined lines really show nicely and the finish is spot-on!

This is a prototype, so the production batch should be done soon.

Merckx Mondays

Merckx Mondays

This week's Merckx Mondays is all about the team 7-11 bikes! One of the more iconic team colors, the 7-11 production frames were made from Columbus TSX tubing.

7-11 had a lot of talent on the team throughout the years, including Andy Hamsten. If you followed cycling at all in the 80's, you'd remember his name. Even though he rode a John Slawta-built Huffy 7-11 in the early years, eventually 7-11 became a Merckx team in 1989-1990. Later on he even rode for Motorola, another Merckx team. More on that to come!

In the meanwhile, check out the various media support on the 7-11 Merckx and a very nice build from Sage Brown.

Check out the retail of the complete build!

Another 7-11 rider, Laurent Fignon's winning cover.

Sage Brown's 7-11 build. He recently sold this on eBay for a pretty penny. In the late 90's Eddy Merckx re-issued the 7-11 team colors in a limited run. I'm fairly certain this is one of those builds. Still really nice!

Thanks to Tears for Gears and Diablo Scott for the imagery.

Fyxomatosis Chainrings

Andy over at Fyxomatosis and I were talking chainrings last night and he brought to my attention that he can make the Fyxo rings in any BCD, 5, 4 or 3 bolt. 151, 144, 130 or even 110. Here's a 110 he made recently. Hell, they'll even make them up to 96t!

They also have the ability to make a Nuovo Record inspired profile.

151bcd Campagnolo Nuovo Record Pista

151bcd Campagnolo Nuovo Record Pista

To go with my Campy 151 bcd Pista cranks on my Merckx, I just got a 151 Nuovo Record Pista ring. This isn't just any ring. It's a so-called 'sprinters ring'.

Campy made these a while ago for the biggest sprinters. They were almost twice the thickness of normal Pista rings to give extra stiffness for the monsters who tore around the track.

Pretty neat and really beefy. It's almost twice the weight of a normal ring. Anyone have anymore information on these? I'd like to see some more documentation on these rings.

I'll be polishing this up tomorrow before I put it on the bike.

Two pink bikes in one day? Yes. I couldn't let this build go by without posting it. Alan from Cycling WMD caught a nice auction on Craigslist this past weekend. He drove over to look at the bike and got the full tour of the seller's stable and collection. Really great write-up over at his blog, so head over and read up about it!

Great build. 1979 with Super Record (With Corsa Record brakes?) and Cinelli bits. Enjoy the ride man!

Nagasawa Rides Again

Nagasawa Rides Again

Sasha had an unfortunate experience with his Nagasawa a while back. Rust had taken over his chainstays, fork crown, head lugs, bottom bracket, seat tube and downtube. While most people would have just thrown the frame away, Sasha contacted Nagasawa who replaced the tubes that were damaged and even reinforced the delicate Keirin frame for street riding. Seriously, his bike has gussets! He also added cable guides!

For more information, check out Sasha's explanation here and the full Flickr set here.

This is why I love posting Merckx Mondays. If you didn't catch the comments that Harry left last week, then head over and read them.

This week I've posted two Merckx Professional models, the Professional Road and Professional Track from a catalog I have saved on my computer. Both are fully dressed in Super Record components and a Cinelli cockpit. Look at that track gearing on the Pista!

Then there's this image of the Cannibal himself standing with the full road line from that year.

Beautiful builds. If anyone knows the year of the catalog, could you update me on the comments? My scans don't have the dates on them.

I just came across these pictures of Di-Fe's black Pedersen on Flickr. Pedersens are the self-proclaimed Bentley of Bikes. A guy back home in NC had one. I remember seeing him riding it around and thinking "what a nutty bike". Arguing ergonomics, strength and stiffness, their unique design sets them apart from other bicycles.

I wanna ride one. Something about the truss-inspired design and hammock-saddle makes me think the handling would be a unique ride.

Edit: Nick from Redbull commented that there is a category where fixed gear shots could be entered, so shoot away!

NYC is Still Rad

NYC is Still Rad

With all the videos I post about u-lock beat-downs, bike thieves caught in the act and pedicab throw-downs, I wanted to post something that shows NYC in a playful light. If you ride through the city on any given day, you'll see a ton of pedestrians hailing cabs. Some step right into the bike lanes, practically taking the whole lane up while they impatiently flail their arm.

What I like to do is drop a high-five on the unsuspecting people. Some people laugh, some get pissed, others sit there un-phased. This video shows a ton of taxi-cab hailing high-fives in action. Love seeing the people's faces!

Quoc Pham Fixed Shoes

Quoc Pham Fixed Shoes

I tell you what, I've lost so many auctions on eBay trying to acquire a vintage pair of cycling shoes. Sure, I love clipless, but sometimes I don't want to swap my pedals out just to do park laps and honestly, I like the security of double straps when I'm doing park laps on my Merckx Pista. After seeing companies come out with vintage-inspired cycling shoes and either fail on the stiff sole or price-point categories, I was relieved when Quoc of Quoc Pham contacted me and offered to send me a pair of his hand made shoes.

For Ł90 you get a pair of these beautiful shoes. Full leather upper, rubber sole, stiff insole and reflective accents. The profile fits my feet perfectly and they fit in toe clips with the same vintage silhouette you'd expect from a pair of traditional cycling shoes. Throw on your wool tights and socks and head out on your ride. They do fit true to size, so no guessing. I wear a size 12 in most shoes and the size 46 fit just right.

These shoes are comfortable. No awkward duck-walking like you have with clipless road cleats. Overall, I'm very pleased with this product and will post a full review after I heal up and am able to ride my bike more. For the money, this is by far your best option! You'd be hard pressed to find a better constructed shoe.

To read up on the background of Quoc Pham, head to his site and to check out the availability of the shoes, check out the collection here. As of now, the black leather fixed shoe is all that's available.

Be sure to check out the lacing diagrams on the website to ensure you get the best experience from the shoes.

Tokyo Bike Shop: Sexon Super Peace

Tokyo Bike Shop: Sexon Super Peace

entrance

This week, I'll be posting a few Tokyo Bike Shop reviews amongst the normal content. Make sure you check them out because these shops are littered with bike porn!

Sexon Super Peace is a block or so away from Dreamworks in Shibuya, Tokyo. The street presence is undeniable. Flashy 3Renshos sit a few feet from the sidewalk, a beautiful Path Racer adorns the windows and the minimalist interiors create the perfect backdrop for beautiful bikes from all over.

from inside - to out

The shop is littered with vintage and new track bike goods. It was really tempting not to blow my budget on some NOS Campy bits for my Merckx. Not to mention all the wheels!

through the rear triangles

Countless frames hang from the ceiling, all reasonably priced, walls of brightly-colored saddles lines the shelves, NOS Campy goodies and a plethora of vintage wheels.

beautiful Renshos

As I said, these Renshos are probably the most beautiful bikes I saw on the trip. Aside from a few minor building faux pas, they would really cause a stir at any bike show. I wouldn't even guess at what the full builds would sell for!

Major Taylor style adjustable track stem

This vintage path racer has become the icon for the shop. I remember seeing the front of the shop a while back and it certainly stuck in my head. Very proper build. Period correct.

saddles saddles saddles

Sexon has one of the best saddle selections I've ever seen at a bike shop. This is only a fraction of their saddle stock. Down below and to the sides are boxes filled with vintage and new saddles, perfect for any build.

tools

What shop isn't complete with a building area? What stuck out the most to me when I was visiting shops in Tokyo was the lack of building areas and work stands. I don't think I saw a single work stand at any of the track bike shops. The building areas were super tiny too. Just big enough to build one bike at a time. I guess, in the end, that's all you really need!

So next time you're in Tokyo, head on over to Sexon Super Peace and be prepared to drop some Yen!

Hoarding

Hoarding

Velo Cult has a nice little post about hoarding saddles. There was a time a while back, where my parts bin had 20 Turbos. 10 were NOS that I bought from a shop in Washington that was selling off their inventory. The rest were various Supers, Gels, Bernard Hinaults and Bios. Over time I sold them when I needed money and now I think I'm down to 5. Now with the re-issue, I feel like I don't need to hoard them as much.

The only saddles I'm squirreling away now are the Cinelli Unicanitors and the Concors. As long as those two saddle's re-issues are far-off from matching the originals, It'll stay that way.

Many props to Velo Cult for the rad post and pics!

Feather Cycles

Feather Cycles

I met Ricky about a month ago through Nate. He was visiting from Leeds and was in NYC to ride BMX. We hung around for a bit, shot the shit and rode a popular spot in Brooklyn. Really nice guy. Kills BMX. Like to the point where you feel uncomfortable riding a silly fixed gear around him ya know? He was totally cool about it though and showed a real interest in track bikes. He even said hadn't seen people do 180's down stairs on fixed gears before.

That brought about him talking about track bikes. He said he and his friends were really into riding them and come to find out, he's got a company now. Feather Cycles just launched and he's got his first two frames posted.

Throughout the years, I've always found that the people who are humble about their work, well, usually outshine everyone. Ricky is totally that kind of person. I had no idea he was such a great welder or craftsman.

Seriously, the bikes look good man. Real good. Totally digging the head badge too. If you're interested in setting up an order, hit Ricky up here.

Dazzle Canoe

Dazzle Canoe

I love Dazzle camo. I got a book on old warship's camouflage a few years back and when I first saw it, I was blown away. So ill. Even though it was used on WWI warships, people have re-appropriated it to fashion, graphic design, graffiti and even architecture. This canoe was a project of Carrie Schneider. Thanks to Matt from Makergo for the heads up!

I really would like to paint a Bruiser like that. Even though Camo has been done before!

Super Ted's ESB

Super Ted's ESB

Super Ted is at it again. He's now making bikes for Shop 14 and churning them out with total steez points. This bike is a two-face paint job. On the left a nice coat of green wet paint and on the right, the raw deal, showing all the brazing. Looks killer man! The guys at Shop 14 took a few bikes to Eurobike with them.

From Shop14's blog:
SuperTed designed Trickframe named the ESB. Made from Reynolds 631 or 853 tubing, CNC machined T45 bb shell, CNC machined T45 Intergrated headtube, Laser cut stainless steel dropouts (frame & Fork), , Reynolds 853 fork legs and a one piece CNC machined T45 steerer tube.

Reg Harris' Power

Reg Harris' Power

Track racers are monsters. Even before beasts like Boss and Hoy were old enough to ride a bike, men like Reg Harris exhibited pure power at the track. 4 world titles during his career and a post-retirement championship title in 1974 at the age of 54.

This picture shows the strength he possessed. Just look at that chain slack during his final sprint!

Icarus Dirt Track

Ian does lovely work and this is just one example. Icarus is a frame builder from Boston that has been churning out beautiful frames for a little while now. My friend Jody has had one for about a year and Ian made him those custom aero track drops not too long ago. Another NY'r, Nikola just got an S&S couplered track frame from him too!

Nice subtle detailing here. Nothing over the top. This bike rules. I'd love to rip around a grasstrack on it! I'm sure Lucian will enjoy it!

Godscogs ISO Hubs

Godscogs ISO Hubs

This took me a second to gather what was going on. I talk a lot about innovation on this blog and I personally when I see someone try something new, it really gets me stoked! Now, I've never seen a lacing pattern like this. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, just stating that I've never seen it. If you have, by all means, share it with us!

Gods Cogs are ISO 6-bolt cogs with an interesting spin on lacing. The wheel shown here is 32h lacing, 12-8-12. The production runs will be 36h, 12-12-12 lacing. The hub is laced to a Dodici rim.

Ok, all you industrial design / engineering heads, lemme know if you think this will be stronger than a 36h wheel laced 4x!

Really rad idea. Keep it up guys!

Dalek and Delta Exhibition at Elms Lesters Painting Room

Dalek and Delta Exhibition at Elms Lesters Painting Room

Delta is by far my favorite artists. Not graffiti or street artist, just artist. I met Boris Tellegen in Amsterdam about 6 years ago. Prior to that, I had found his work in a Dutch architecture magazine. He went to industrial design school and began to explore 3D tessellations and installations.

These are some pics from his and Dalek's exhibition.

Although both artists’ work appears to have similarities with its underlying geometric themes, it is diametrically opposed “Marshall’s use of straight line and colour is all to do with the “super flat” surface and the ambiguity of the exaggerated optical perspectives, while Tellegen’s focus is on surface, texture and shadows,’ said curator Paul Jones in a recent interview with DESIGN WEEK ‘While I have exhibited both artists within larger group shows, I thought this two-man show would challenge and stimulate viewers’

Amsterdam based Boris Tellegen will be showing an impressive body of new works including canvases, collages and some new 3D sculptural wall pieces from his evolving ‘diversion’ series..

..and juxtaposed will be a selection of American artist James Marshall’s meticulous geometric paintings, including a large scale, site specific installation painted during a recent residency at the gallery.

Such amazing work!

Velo Orange, the purveyor of fine bicycle components and frames have just released some pictures of their new Mixte model. Perfect bike for your lady friend!

Here's what they have to say about it:

A few VO Mixte frame prototypes have arrived. As with most prototypes there are a few small problems, fork bend, missing cable guides, etc, but overall they look great.

Details:

* Around $700 including fork
* Lugged double butted chromo frame.
* 50cm, 54cm, 57cm sizes
* 700c wheels
* Extra long reach brakes
* 38mm max tires
* Were shooting for Jan 2010 delivery.

Head over to their blog for more detail shots.

The details and quality of these frames are remarkable. Right down to the subtle nuances that separate Kinfolk from other steel-bike manufacturers.

Kinfolk teamed up with Carnival Tokyo to co-brand this build.

I think it came out pretty well. There would be a few things I'd change if it were my bike, but it looks good!

Momentum Recap

Momentum Recap

Originally from Massachusetts, Matt W. Moore has brought his fine-tuned, self-proclaimed "Vectorfunk" style back to the state with a well rounded body of work. His signature style canvas work, a departure from the norm into watercolor and collage work, as well as a small series of prints are hanging in the gallery. In conjunction with the traditional works, Matt has come together with Open and Traitor Cycles to present a series of five hand-painted frames, a cycling cap and t-shirt. Please visit the project's micro-site for a more in-depth look and to purchase select pieces of the Momentum project.
Visit Momentum Site.

Show hangs from August 15th, 2009 to September 15th, 2009.

"The bike project and other skate/snow/surf projects are ideal. I’m working with brands I have a lot of admiration for. I’m immersed in the culture; painting a bike is native to me - I ride every day. I want people to ride these bikes, not hang them up because they‘re scared to ride them. I do plenty of work that can be only hung up. Shred this bike for 10 summers, then hang it up and say it had a life."

Matt W. Moore / Arist & Designer

"The time and effort to which Matt and Zack have put into this show speak volumes of their love for what they do. This is obvious to anyone who has stepped foot in Open or has been in the presence of Matt’s art. We hold the work done at Open Bicycle, Chorus Gallery and Matt in the highest regard and are thrilled to have been asked to be a part of this."

Joe / Traitor Cycles

"Seeing a project go from conversation to completion is always great, especially when the outcome reaches a level far beyond what we all first imagined. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we have."

Many riders feel like fixed gears are under fire.

Those About to Die Salute You

Those About to Die Salute You

Duke Riley, the artist who did my Behemoth tattoo, has an event in Flushing-Meadows, Queens this Thursday. It's not a normal "gallery" event either, it's a naval battle footfight. Duke and his minions constructed boats from the reeds in the neighboring park and will set them assail in the reflecting pool outside the Queens Museum of Art at 6:30 on the 13th of August.

Looks so epic! Good job Duke!

Duke Riley has always been interested in the space where water meets land within the urban landscape and is known for art work that is an idiosyncratic mix of performance art, sailor’s craft and historical re-enactment. Upon QMA’s invitation for an artist residency, Riley’s life-long fascination with the culture and topography of waterfronts, and proclivity for margins - of society, history, etc. - were immediately focused on the decommissioned World’s Fair Ice Rink adjacent to the museum. The sight of the vast oval arena, a sea of refrigeration tubing and white sand, brought an instant association with ancient Roman coliseums that were flooded to stage violent naval battles or Naumachia for the delight of spectators in the Empire’s effort to distract the masses from societal collapse by indulging them with free bread and extravagant spectacle.

Alpe d'Huez Brooks Saddle

Alpe d'Huez Brooks Saddle

I don't usually get into the whole custom saddle thing. Mostly because I tend to ruin saddles all the time and why spend a lot of money on some "limited" art piece only to trash it in a few months?

I will however say the design intent behind these custom Brooks saddles is really nice. If you watch the Tour every year, then you've obviously heard of The Alpe d'Huez. It's been a stage finish of the tour since '76. Back when the tour was ridden on steel bikes and no one even knew what carbon fiber was, the racers were all riding Brooks saddles.

Now that time has passed, but Brooks commemorates those racers by collaborating with a wallpaper artist. Dan Funderburgh is an artist from Brooklyn and he used the topography map from the Alpe d'Huez for the design. Dan loves bicycles and I'm sure he was stoked to have Brooks approach him.

Tom Sachs Tequila Bike for Lance

Tom Sachs Tequila Bike for Lance

I know these bikes have been posted all over the net, but Tom Sachs' bike is the winner in my book. It had a case of Tequila on a Cetma rack and a spout to pour shots. The Cutters and yes, Lance all got wasted at the private party in Paris. Eventually, they all got kicked out of the party.

The bike looks good and all, but the zinger is in the details. Mr. Sachs took a dremmel and scraped away all the "SRAM" labels and wrote "Campagnolo" beside it. Pretty funny.

Fashion, photography, industrial and graphic design. Sometimes being around professionals only in your field is limiting.

His site is littered with incredible information and he too has a strong love for Merckx bicycles.

After I got my MX-Leader, we were discussing MAX (MXL's predecessor) and he informed me that he would be uploading a catalog from 1992. Very informative, so head over and read his site.

Wonka Battery Park 6 180

This stair set is massive. It's a long 6 and the landing isn't as long as you'd want it to be considering the speed you have to get in order to clear it. Ed told me about this last week. Glad to finally see the sequence!

I'll Admit It

I'll Admit It

I know it's old news, but last year at Interbike when I saw the MASH & Cinelli project, I was really impressed. It even had black anodized C-Record track cranks. This is one of the few newer aluminum frames that I'd ride. Beautifully done. It doesn't look all Formula 1 race car like the Vigorelli either. Would be a beast at the track!

Core77 Dutchmaster

Core77 Dutchmaster

This bike reminds me of one of the old hacked-up ballon-tire beach cruisers that early mountain bikers used to thrash old fire trails on back before mountain bikes were a staple of the cycling world. Really really rad. Text and pics below by Core77. Be sure to catch the launch party at the Apple Store in SoHo. 3pm...

Today, Core77 proudly introduces a limited edition bicycle--named the "Dutch Master"--celebrating New York bike culture and a heritage of local manufacturing.

The Dutch Master is based on the beloved Worksman cruiser frame--a workhorse foundation used throughout the New York delivery community, and manufactured in Queens, New York for over 110 years. Core77 customized the frame, fitting it out with a carefully curated set of components, each with its own story.

The bike was hand-built by KT Higgins, a Brooklyn-based ex-bike messenger (infamous for her crash in the movie Pedal), and proprietor of Bushwick Bike Shop, her one-year-old bikeshop in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn.

1921 One-Legged Trick Cyclists

1921 One-Legged Trick Cyclists

Via Shorpy, these pictures are from January 29, 1921 in Washington, D.C. "Herbert Bell and Joe Garso." were two one-legged cyclists who were most likely war vets (hence the missing legs) and took their love for cycling to a new height in the 1920's.

Some of these moves look familar, others will remain lost in time for obvious reasons...

THE REVIVAL/KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON from morehartfilms on Vimeo.

Mr. Briggs from Skitch just sent me an email with the new Revival trailer linked. Check out what Tom has to say about it!

Due to the trip being cancelled last month Wayne has taken it upon himself to create a short precurser video to the main video project. Basically the short video will be out in November and is title The Revival presents Keep On Keepin' On. The project focuses on Seattle and Vancouver while the main Revival video that will be out early next year will be more broad and include both west coast and east coast riders. We were really bumbed about having to cancel the trip last month so suddenly and felt that it would be good if we put out something sooner rather than later and that's where Keep On Keepin' On came from.

Anchor RNC7 Pro

Anchor RNC7 Pro

Wow. Bridgestone / Anchor really blew me away with this. Seriously. Their 10th Anniversay marks the release of the RNC7 Pro, a steel road bike equipped with Dura Ace and beautiful half-lugs.

Their site, although in Japanese seems to say that through re-examining the stresses found in OS tubing, they found that it added uneeded weight and drag. The solution? They made molds by pumping oil to the tube to form the unique shape which enabled them to attach the tubes without lugs. A technique they used on their MTBs back in the '90s. Really rad. I want one!

Jonathan Williams: Biker Tribes

Jonathan Williams: Biker Tribes

The Times (London Times) asked Jonathan Williams to illustrate the different biker tribes in their city. Here are my favs:

Above

The Urban Speedster

Clive has a pink, all-in-one lycra leotard, and doesn't see why he ought to be ashamed about that. His bicycle cost many thousands of pounds, and is made of the same sort of stuff as badminton racquets. Clive rides his bicycle every day but, at the weekend, instead of cycling at high speed to his job in the City, he'll cycle at high speed to a bicycle shop. Here, he will spend many more thousands of pounds having bits removed from his bicycle, and replaced by other bits that are almost, but not entirely, exactly the same. Clive's bicycle lives in the living room, in front of the television. He has no wife.

The Sit up and Beg Biker

They don't go very fast, these bikes, but Emily didn't buy hers to get around quickly. She bought it because she liked the leather saddle, and the pretty basket. At first, she used to cycle around staring at the clouds, but the dentist won't let her do that any more. Emily's boyfriend constantly nags her about cycling in ballet pumps, and says she ought to wear some neon lycra. Emily always smiles, sweetly, but she's quite happy in her muted flowing asymmetrical skirts. Although her hems do get caught in the chain.

Where is the fixed gear rider illustration? Just this:

The Fakenger
Lee actually does IT for a small accountancy firm in Fitzrovia, but you would never guess that if you spotted him cycling to work from his home in Hackney. In his camouflage shorts and his cut-off tights, with his bag strapped up high on his back and his special shoes that don’t let him take his feet off the pedals, ever, he’s a dead ringer for a bona fide cycle courier. His bike has no gears and no brakes, and is festooned with tatty bits of string and masking tape. When Lee sees a bicycle with wheels that are thinner than his own it sends him into a powerful rage. He’d be a real cycle courier if he didn’t get lost so much.

Cheers...

MVRDV on Deutsche Welle TV

MVRDV on Deutsche Welle TV

There are moments in your professional career where you encounter pure inspiration. For me, this came in the form of the Dutch firm MVRDV's work. When I was in Holland 5 years ago, I rode across the country visiting all of their completed work. Coming out of school and seeing design-intensive, theoretical work actually built, not just talked about was just what I needed to push myself.

Check out this interview with the Dutch Architects as Deutsche Welle TV chats with directors Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and the owners of the Didden Village house, and mentions of the works Westerdokeiland, Rotterdam Market Hall, Parkrand and others.

Duke Riley :: Artist + Patriot

Duke Riley :: Artist + Patriot

Riley_Monster.jpg

Speaking of sea beasties, I had my last session with Duke Riley at East River Tattoo last night. He finished my behemoth and it looks phenomenal. There really isn't a better artist for this job. I think it was this piece that got me excited to work with him.

Growing up on the coast of NC and surfing the OBX and hurricane swells, you have to have heard of the sandbars littering the coast referred to as the 'Graveyard of the Atlantic'. These sandbars used to wreck ships and still to this day, can be a treacherous area to navigate. Sailors used to tell tall tales of giant beasts that devoured ships whole and killed the crew.

Well, this is inspired from such a beast. I found an old sailing chart from the 15th century and used that as a precedent. Duke's handy-work did the rest!

This City Can't Swallow Me

Matt Lingo is a photographer living and working in LA. He's spent a lot of time documenting the local fixed gear scene in San Diego and has just compiled and finished a book entitled This City Can't Swallow Me.

Here's his description of the project:

"A fixed gear bicycle is a bike with a cog that doesn't have a freewheel mechanism meaning as long as the back wheel is moving, the pedals are moving. Although traditionally used strictly on a velodrome track, more and more riders are choosing these brakeless bikes for use on the road. They have a unique style of riding through traffic that I've tried to capture in this body of work."

Head over and check out some of his shots here! and keep watch on his blog here.

Alsop Chips

Alsop Chips

rendering and reality

A reader forwarded me this project by Alsop Architecture. They said it was 'right up my alley' and they were very right. When I first saw it, I immediately thought it was an MVRDV project. I was wrong obviously. Hell, I even thought it was a Dutch project. Wrong again. This 8-story project was just completed in Manchester.

The parti model of stacking blocks is very much a dutch approach to architecture. In fact, I'm not ruling out that Alsop used MVRDV as a precedent of sorts for it. The project is entitled Chips and consists of "3 fat chips stacked on top of each other". While most projects relate to the context via vernacular stylings, Chips relates through the use of super graphics.

Each mass has text on it that relates to its surrounding neighborhood.

Pretty rad! Head over to Alsop to see more images.

FGLDN & 14 Bike Co Frame by Ted James

I know it's already been posted everywhere, but there's something I want to emphasize here...

Look, everyone is into this new cool thing called fixed gears and it seems like in the past few months, we're seeing more and more people express their love for it in various ways. Some people blog, some photograph, some videotape, some write articles, some build, some create and some market. It's really great and we need to support this! Hell, if you have an idea, run with it!

This project is the by-product of real man hours. That man is "Super" Ted James. I've yet to meet Ted, but one day I'd hope to. As always, I extend a welcoming hand to NYC anytime Ted!

14 Bike Co is a recently opened shop in London. Super Ted is building 14 bikes for the shops 14 riders. Those chain gang guys and gals are slowly receiving their frames at the mo' [how's that for vernacular slang?] and even though that's not the final fork [in fact, that's an aftermarket fork], Ted's busy designing and cranking away at these bikes. You can see more pictures here and follow their updates here, at their blog.

Ted, FGLDN and 14 Bike Co, I commend you. GREAT JOB!

Freeman Transport Gravel Racer

Freeman Transport's got a new project on the horizon. Entitled the Gravel Racer, this single speed touring bike comes in two models, the basic and the delux. The patinae on the fork is amazing. It looks like copper, but they used gun bluing and ferric browns to achieve the same rich coloration.

You can also purchase the waxed canvas and leather saddle bag for $75 from Freeman directly.

Text via Freeman Transport:

Nathaniel’s great-great-grandfather was an inventor during the Industrial Revolution. His contributions include many but perhaps his most controversial – the sites for the Colt .45.
In his honor we've built a bicycle with a finish similar to that gun, richly patinaed with gun bluing and ferric browns, sealed with tree wax and ready to age. It comes with or without couplings, stainless steel lugged rack, chain guard and fenders, and can be built fixed or coaster braked and is perfect for commuting or general transport.

Phil Wood Limiteds

Phil Wood Limiteds

You gotta hand it to Phil Wood. Not only do they make some of the most sought-after track hubs on the market, they have managed to continuously make their hubs in the US. Even in the horrible economy, the people at Phil Wood are moving forward.

I'm not usually one to get all hyped up on limited bike parts but these hubs look pretty nuts. I had a set of Bayliss Wiley hubs on my Higgins Path Racer and have always loved the old 1950's hub designs. Large, weight-reducing holes cut in the flanges just make a hub look extra sexy. Now I'm not so sure these hubs are as light as the Wiley hubs, but they sure do look pretty.

Affinity got in a few sets of silver and purple last week. I snapped a quick pic after picking up a wheelset. Excuse my fingerprints.

Kenny Scharf Does it Right

Kenny Scharf Does it Right

Kenny Scharf's graphics on the Livestrong series Trek TTX has gotta be one of the best collaborative bike frames to date. Something about it reminds me of the old World Industries graphics. Ying and Yang, water vs. fire, etc. I refuse to post the Shepard Fairey one. It's hideous.

Precedents not Knock-offs

Precedents not Knock-offs

Some people like to blast out on companies for "knocking-off" older-styled bicycle components. I for one welcome it. Let's look at it realistically people, Campagnolo made the first Nuovo Record rings with a double band. Years later, Sugino released the Mighty ring. Same with Campy hubs. Almost everything that was first Italian was later copied by the Japanese companies. Then, when the Italian companies went the tech route, Japanese tradition made these components better, improving on them for years.

Now, with the popularity of track bikes, people want those classic-looking components but don't have the money to buy the old vintage pieces. Whereas most of the cycling world has gone the Carbon / gram weight weenie approach, a few companies are re-issuing their classic designs. San Marco for one, has reissued their Concor. Cinelli has reissued the Unicanitor, but Campagnolo will never reissue their older models. Why? I don't know. Some people even take the effort to photoshop the modern Campy lines into the popular and highly sought-after Corsa line... Hell, I'm convinced! Levis continues to make their older models, step it up Campy!

But for one, I won't blast-on companies meeting this demand! Hell, I love my Grunge saddle Turbo / Concor knockoff. It's replaceable.

For instance, the new Starfuckers rings look nice. CNC Milled front and back ring with drillium holes. Very classy!

In the name of good times, great spots and progressive riding, we are proud to announce that we’re packing our bags and hitting the road. Armed with HD cameras we’ll be heading out in search of some of the best riding North America has to offer.
Beginning on May 16th, 2009 we will be touring eastern cities, starting in Toronto then heading to Montreal and finally arriving in the Big Apple. We aim to reveal the riding and culture that exists within each one of these amazing cities. Filming is also underway in Vancouver where the locals have been pushing hard to lay down some of the best lines ever seen on a fixed gear.

pics by Miha Matei

My good friend Devotion just finished up his first frame. The complete bike is stunning and definitely a noble steed worthy of his already insane stable. All of his builds seem effortless and completely comfortable. Read below as he describes what went into this work of art...

MB1_1.jpg

The build of the bike was very much inspired by British "club racers" and "all-rounders" of the 50's and 60's. Being my first frame, I liked the idea that a single bike could be built to be ridden with a number of intentions. British racers used to ride geared/fendered bikes to the track, often carrying a spare set of track wheels on fork mounted "sprint carriers" and then convert it to a "path racer"...only to re-install the fenders, brakes and other bits before heading home.

Knowing that I will never part with this first frame, I wanted a versatile build that I could set up in a number of ways for the rest of my life. The clamp-ons and 120mm rear spacing mean I can set it up as a fixed-gear, 5 or 10 speed with relative ease. Truth be told, I just wanted an excuse to gather all of the cool old Campy bits. While it does have fender clearance, it's more of a vintage racing bike (traditional racing geometry of 73 degrees parallel) than a vintage rando bike.

sdfvasdvdfgv.jpg

I've posted about Razzle camouflage multiple times in the past; 1,2 and 3 previous posts.

Now the RISD Fleet Library has an exhibition and lecture series on the WWI camouflage.

bfgnjhmtk.jpg

"Razzle dazzle" was a form of camouflage used by the US and UK during WWI. Its intent was to cause miscalculation in estimation of the ship's speed and direction. The visual rangefinders of the time were easily fooled by the contrasting and overlapping geometric patterns. The markings of such camouflage have since then made their way into different forms of artistic expression. Now I'm not sure that artists pulled from 'razzle dazzle' as a form of precedent, but the similarity is striking. Here is a beautiful image of such camouflage patterns. Unfortunately, there were no color images of these war ships.

The Dutch nail it again. When I was in Holland, I got to ride a few of the rentable cruiser bikes and was really blown away at the amount of bikes that were out on the streets at given moment. Rain or shine, people rode all the time. I was also blown away at all the bike parking. While all these bikes are locked up outside, why not soak up some Sun and put it to use?

Strida's MOOF was designed in Amsterdam and addresses this issue in a unique way. This bike has PV Cells on the top tube that power a front and rear light. Strida claims the two lights are for one to light the way and the other to make you visible from behind., making me believe that they'll be bright enough.

The through-top tube reminds me of the Dovetusai bike I posted a while back, only the MOOF has a downtube and looks like it'll hold up well as a legit commuter.

Those of you who are either Architects / designers and have been following this blog since 2006 may remember the following project. Casa Torcida was my primary project while I was at SPG Architects. I spent 2 years working on it and it took another 2 to complete, but a visit to their site this morning revealed the final product.

So beautiful!

Delugan Meissl Associated Architects' newest project recently opened in Stuttgart, Germany. When high-end architecture and high-end automobile manufacturers come together, you can expect things of great beauty and engineering. When the automobile maker is Porsche, you can expect nothing less than perfection.

My Milwaukee

My Milwaukee

7.jpg

Today I spent a good 6 hours riding the new Milwaukee Bicycle Co fixed gear. It's the most stable bike I've ever ridden. No rear triangle flex, no overlap and a solid front end makes it handle like a Beast. After I got over the initial shock of having a top tube again, I began to throw the bike around. The steep HTA [74.5°] and the longer top tube really increases maneuverability with spin tricks. 180s are easier and anything with a g-turn initiation feels much sharper.

We rode from Williamsburg over to Chinatown, down to DUMBO and further southwest to Red Hook. I rode all day, doing 180's hitting gaps and all the normal riding we go through and not once did I feel uncomfortable with its movements.

I'm sold. Seeing this project come to life has really made me stoked to ride! Still not sure on availability or pricing, so don't ask. Once I find out, I'll post the information.

Koolhand

Koolhand

rem1.jpg

Rem Koolhaas, the Dutch mastermind behind Office For Metropolitan Architecture has influenced many architecture students and practicioners over the years. He's the driving force behind internationally acclaimed masterpieces like the CCTV building, the Seattle Public Library and the Porto Concert Hall.

Now he's inspired a typeface. FWIS used Koohaas' Miesian typologies to create a typeface that's more representative of his work, rather than a usable type.

"‘koolhand’ is a new type face which takes its form from the architectural works of rem koolhaas.
the typeface is designed by fwis and art directed by chris papasadero. he is aiming to design a font
a day for the month of january and is posting them on his website. while the letters in ‘koolhand’
aren’t really designed for legibility, papasadero envisions them for textural treatments. "

Joel's a busy guy. When he's not designing cabinetry for his shop in Long Island, he's either designing stickers, t-shirts, large skulls, painting huge naked girls and even making his own limited toy.

Check out this collaborative effort between Super 7 and his moniker Lamour Supreme. I never really dove into the Kaiju / Japanese limited toy collection game, partially because it's such an expensive hobby and frankly, my girlfriend would kill me if I spent anywhere near the amount of money on some of their price tags.

I'm in between Trackstar, DQM, Chari&Co and the Brooklyn Banks. Just about everyday I head out on a nice hour long ride. Today I hung out at Chari&Co for a little bit and snapped a few shots.

Pure Norwegian Box Architecture

Pure Norwegian Box Architecture

evfqewrbwrtnrht.jpg

Hailing from Oslo, Norway, Rintala Eggertsson Architects created this 19 square meter house. It is essentially living stripped to the minimal requirements. Smart living. Programmed living. The reason this project strikes me as beautiful is mostly because of the material choices. The exterior looks like Leviathan out of the Hellraiser movies and yet the inside is clad with a nice warm wood. The structure is also framed from wood.

dcveqve.jpg

Typically in the US and other countries when Architects create minimal dwellings such as this, the cold and harsh materials will continue to the interior, resulting in a house that feels more like a prison than a warm and welcoming home.

First seen at Dezeen and then redirected to Rintala Eggersson's homepage.

Back when mustaches weren't ironic

The Library of Congress has some amazing photography that not only references how to properly build a path racer, but also how to grow an ironic mustache. Again, this isn't anything new, seeing as how these images have been available online for a while now, but sometimes it's just cool to see things come full circle. Even an elongated circle made by all-left turns.

Gaganho Home

Gaganho Home

family_house_by_Pedro_Gadanho_yatzer11.jpg

Fabrik Project just posted this project by the Portuguese architect Pedro Gaganho. I've seen Pedro's work before and his use of heavy geometric shapes is often at the building-scale. Some would think such a design approach would be clunky and out of place in a smaller space scaled for the everyday, but I think this is perfection. The proportions are scaled down in such a way that the geometries pull the occupant into the various programmed spaces.

Not just anyone could pull this off!

In case you've never seen these...

Here's Devotion's classic Frejus with a Cinelli adjustable stem. Titan also made a similar quill and the idea was that rather than making multiple stem lengths, you just make one that's adjustable for different rider's specifications.

2859861616_020b6becf5.jpg

Sexy as hell and a bit pricey for NOS and used they fetch upwards of $200 USD. Even though it's vastly inferior to today's threadless stems in terms of stiffness, the old school track nuts go bonkers over them.

Eventually they just made varying lengths, as evident in my old Titan bar / stem combo that was on my Higgins.

MKE 700c Unicrown Fork

MKE 700c Unicrown Fork

3080029845_8441bc9597.jpg

It feels like it's been ages since I first began talking to Milwaukee Bicycle Co. about doing a Fixed Gear bike designed for the ever-evolving freestyle rider. We've logged in many many Gmail conversations over the past few months and finally, the fruits of our labor have begun to ripen.

3080867946_96fce196ab.jpg

Here it is, well part of it anyway, the new MKE 700c Unicrown Fork. I can't really go into to much detail about the specifications because it's a prototype, but I can say that it fits on my Gangsta Track fine and even gives me more clearance for barspins than the stock one did. It's designed for a steeper HTA, so the bike handles a bit differently, but in a good way. It is not as long as the Black Market or DMR forks because it's designed specifically for a 700c wheel. Not a rigid 26" bike.

3080868406_bcb24a1352.jpg

Within the next few weeks, you'll see the second installment of this project. I can't wait. Milwaukee has been great about supporting this evolving sport. Their ability to change their products based on rider feedback will set this bike apart from the rest.

The Holy Grail

The Holy Grail

7%20ELEVEN%20E%20M%20002.jpg

Sure, the Holy Grail to most is a golden goblet from which Christ drank from at the Last Supper. Indiana Jones taught us that the grail was in fact, made from wood, since Christ was a carpenter. Well, this my friends is not about a goblet, this is about the Holy Grail for Eddy Merckx fans.

Karl, who I recently bought a jersey from on eBay, got ahold of this 7-Eleven team Merckx. This isn't just any 7-Eleven Merckx, it's the very frame that Axel Merckx, Eddy's son rode and it's made from Reynolds 753. 753 is the heat treated cousin of the famed 531. Not sure on the size, but it looks like a 62cm. Edit: here's the auction, all the information is listed. Now bid away you fiends!

Karl will be listing this on eBay tomorrow, so keep your eyes peeled. I can't wait to see how much this beauty goes for.

If I wasn't so prone to breaking shit, I would love to lace these up to some MA4s.

Kengo Kuma

I don't really post many Architecture lecture events on this blog, but this one is worth going to. Kengo Kuma's work speaks strongly with crisp forms, soft light and warm materials. The infusion of traditional Japanese styling makes their work some of the most inspirational architecture of the modern age. Not to mention the legendary Kenneth Frampton will be moderating the lecture!

Untitled-1.jpg

Handbuilt in Bushwick, Squarebuilt frames have some of NYC's best messengers riding them. This frame was just built up last night and the owner's really digging it. Traditional track angles, 74° 74° and a barspinnable front 700c wheel. This frame's powdercoat is 3m reflective, to keep the rider safe at night.

I rode it at Peel Sessions last night and it's steeper than my Merckx. Great job Squarebuilt!

thanks to Katy for the pics!

Andy, my red-bearded brethren from down under, sent me this photo and it made my day. True bike porn. C-Record Delta brakes are some of the sexiest bicycle components ever made. Form and function [arguable in some camps] conquer all!

Thanks Andy, once again, you deliver!

Anna Telcs and I worked on a submission for NYC's competition to design new bicycle racks for the City.

The design intent was to create two racks in one, eliminating the dead zones created by staggering bicycles. We were also going for a less-expensive, easy to produce and install approach, which many designs lacked.

I know we didn't win, but I'm happy with the way it turned out.

Nick James is not only one of the most dapper lads I know, but his artwork is always impressing me. Check out this piece he just completed. Entitled "Streetwear"... I felt it was relevant to the recent post regarding Pharrell
