Introducing the Speedvagen Integrated Cross Stem Collaboration with ENVE

If you follow @thevanillaworkshop on Instagram, chances are you’ve already seen this project unfolding. Over the years, Speedvagen has been working with ENVE on their Integrated Cross Stem. This stem’s unique integrated front brake routing replaces the traditional cable hanger and the associated flex, weight, chatter and unsightly lines that come with it. Personally, I kinda liked my Funky Monkey but I’ll go with the Speedvagen mantra on this one: “Take away everything that isn’t essential and refine what’s left”.

I just installed the CX Worlds 2013 Commemorative stem on my already dialed Geekhouse Mudville and it instantly feels more patriotic. Unfortunately, I won’t be attending the CX Worlds but at least I can ride the shit out of this stem. Although, I will be missing the bourbon!

Introducing the Fairdale Parser Roger Skateboards Edition

Michael Sieben and Taj Mihelich have been friends since the early days of T-1. So it only made sense that when their respective companies, Roger Skateboards and Fairdale blossomed, they should do a collaboration. Skateboarding is a great way to get around but by the time you get to the spot or the park, you’re already toast, especially in the Summer heat. So these two businessmen thought, hey, why not make a bike that embodies both of our brands and add some pizzazz to it?

The Fairdale Parser Roger Skateboards edition is just that. A simple commuter, stripped down to the basics and with a little extra bounce for the buck. This limited run of 50 will come in Fairdale sizing of 10 small completes, 30 medium, and 10 large. They’ll be built, as shown, minus the hand brake (production model will have a coaster brake), will feature the new Fairdale Archer Bars, a complete Roger skateboard and the new Fairdale Cargo Skaterack.

This is their final sample, done in-house with spraypaint, so expect a much nicer production paint. Retail is $800 and they can be ordered through Full Factory Distribution via your LBS, late May 2012.

Interview: Search and State – Cycling Apparel Made in NYC

A few months back, I read a piece on Headset Press about Search and State, a new cycling apparel line that has been in the works for over a year. Run by Devin O’Brien and Daniel Golden, these two were inspired by NYC and its fashion industry. With so many resources available to them, they’ve been building their brand through a mixture of in-house problem solving and constant PR&D. In celebration of their newly-launched website and products, I asked them to take photos of their facilities in order to give us an isight as to just how they make their apparel in NYC.

Introducing the Rapha Grand Tour Shoes

When I was in Portland, before my tour, the guys at Rapha North America told me about this collaboration with Giro that they had been working on. Their idea was simple: make a cycling shoe that boasts the performance of a modern race shoe, influenced by the classic models from the 70′s. If anyone has nailed that ideology down, it’s Rapha. The Grand Tour Shoes embody the same stylistic approach as their apparel line and by style, I mean simplicity. These minimally-branded, perforated white leather shoes utilize the same technology as Giro’s professional racing shoes and look damn good.
