The crew is back for another edit from Shiba Friday. This edit was shot by Attaco Dai, not Hara-Bow. Maybe Fixy Life's edit will get posted soon. I love watching these videos and one thing's for sure, the Japanese have nose-pivots on lock. No one can touch them. Love the chopped-up edit of Kai, Nasty and Toku throwing them around!
Kai, that one-handed bigspin is pretty man! Good job homie!
Pretty fucking rad little BMX video for the weekend. The Rotterdam waterfront is a great place. You can see the Erasmus brug in the background. Perfect spot to ride. These two BMXrs, Mark Vos and Boy Janssen decided to downhill one of the many buildings on the riverfront. No idea what building it is (thought it was the back of the KPN, but it's not) and this is more than likely fake, but it's still a rad video!
Alexis of Thought You Knew sent me some information on their forthcoming TyK Calender for 2010. The calender features Ladies PinUps and Men's SuperHeroes as the theme and gets pretty creative as you can see from these teaser pics.
All proceeds of the sales go to support the Sadie Hawkins Style Ride via Chicago Women's Health Center. More info here.
Nice edit from the Ride the Republic event last weekend. Smooth, quick lines from AJ and Puckett including a 360 on a quarter and some quick barspin hops to fakie. Then the flatlanders kill everyone. Looks like a fun event!
One thing about the Third Coast kids is their pride for Texas. Where they from? "TEXAS"
In case you missed it, Freshness has a feature up on the bikes of the Stages09 exhibition at The Armory in NYC. Make sure to swing through because this will be one of the last chances to see the bikes before they're auctioned off. If you miss this, you can always check out the Stages09 show at Deitch from October 31 through November 21.

Julio getting scooped up by the bank's transition. Keep watch for these guys in Bootleg Sessions 4. Hopefully the dudes at RVAFixed.com will start updating their site with more pictures. This was taken from Trick Track.
Sexy Sushi just made a post on his blog outlining how he shot Toku's portrait for Loop magazine. The shots are a bit old, but the explanation of how he lit the subjects to capture the mood of Shiba Friday is pretty cool. I think that's what Google translate said anyway!
Reminds me of what Tak does when he shoots us at Peel. Low light and minimal flashes. Be on the look out for Peel, Mishka, Affinity and other NYC people and places in the new issue of Loop. It should be out shortly!
I've been looking for this photo for weeks! The organizers of the CMWC Tokyo had a construction crane on the last day to take a group photo. So many people!
Anyone have a link to a higher-resolution image? I'll host it here, regardless of size. I'm in there, top left, standing by myself. The neon orange fork really pops.
This week's Merckx Mondays is all about the team 7-11 bikes! One of the more iconic team colors, the 7-11 production frames were made from Columbus TSX tubing.
7-11 had a lot of talent on the team throughout the years, including Andy Hamsten. If you followed cycling at all in the 80's, you'd remember his name. Even though he rode a John Slawta-built Huffy 7-11 in the early years, eventually 7-11 became a Merckx team in 1989-1990. Later on he even rode for Motorola, another Merckx team. More on that to come!
In the meanwhile, check out the various media support on the 7-11 Merckx and a very nice build from Sage Brown.
Check out the retail of the complete build!
Another 7-11 rider, Laurent Fignon's winning cover.
Sage Brown's 7-11 build. He recently sold this on eBay for a pretty penny. In the late 90's Eddy Merckx re-issued the 7-11 team colors in a limited run. I'm fairly certain this is one of those builds. Still really nice!
I gotta hand it to Chris. He's persistent. Riding in the rain sucks. I hate even commuting it in, much less doing a bunch of tricks in it. Pretty good riding for it being soaking wet and I love the Horn Head Madball mural at 5Pointz in Long Island City. Keep it up dude. What's up next week?
Vancouver! You guys get to be the home base for the Revival World Premier. Wayne and Tom's masterpiece is nearing completion and on November 8th, they're ready to present it to fixed gear riders all over. These guys are the most genuine people ever who had a vision and the motivation to produce a film in months, not years. Big ups to the whole crew and thanks for asking me to be a part of it!

I've been meaning to post some RVA Fixed pics for a little while now.
These two pics are just one example. The Richmond kids are coming on strong. That's a pretty nice gap with a 2x12 for a landing strip. As you can see, it always doesn't end as nicely as the first image.
Then there's this pic of Mike Schmitt hitting a pretty gnarly wallride. I was in Tokyo when I first saw this and meant to throw it up on the blog when I got back. It's proper. Having spent a lot of time in Richmond, I know these spots. Highway overpasses with minimal traffic make for a ton of banks and this is just one way to work it!
I know Empire seems like it's been dormant, but it hasn't. Between Crihs doing the 42 Below Ride, various injuries and a dead scooter (R.I.P. baby), the guys have been battling all kinds of unforeseen setbacks.
Now that summer's gone and the cold winter months are right around the corner, Luke is keeping it fresh with some pics from production this summer. Head on over to see a few shots by Andy T. and me wearing the most ridiculous Mishka shirt ever.
Livestrong Stages is making its way to NYC. Head over to the site to see a great video showcasing the background on the event and be sure to catch it on October 31st!

Fixed gear boys all over swoon for Juliet. She's a rad girl and leads a busy, busy life. On top of riding for Charge, her and Posy own a promoting company. In her free time, she designs shirts, rides, falls and travels.
On her recent trip to SF, she met up with Brenton Salo to shoot some pics. This one came out nice!
Nice edit from the city where it's always sunny. They Water St. Sessions crew all pull some nice lines in here. I still can't believe how pretty Tom's wheelies to nose mannies are.
Riders:
Brian Santapau
Tom La Marche
Drew Leshko

It's nice to see my homies in Tokyo still killing it. I miss you guys! It must have been raining two weeks ago, because there wasn't a Shiba Friday video from it and from the looks of their clothing, Tokyo must be getting cold out.
That's not stoppin the Shiba Friday crew, or Fixy Life! Kai's nose-pivot rollout is so buttery. Toku and Nasty's lines are smooth as hell and someone almost lands a 720 forward-slider (what are they called?).
Keep putting these videos out guys, they're my favorite videos of the week!
The Show-Up Alleycats guys put out a nice little edit showcasing odds and ends from the past few weeks. Head over to their blog to follow their events!
Funny little edit Fonseca put together from the time he was in NYC for the No Cassettes premiere. It's got some good lines from Fonseca, Torey aka 'HFwido', Soap and Drew from Philly.
Hit me up when you roll back through NYC for Rocco's court date guys!
The city plans to use the internationally known Brooklyn Banks skate park as a staging area during the Brooklyn Bridge reconstruction, which is starting later this year and will last until 2014, said Ralph Musolino, a district manager for the city Parks Dept.
Speaking of the Bicycle Film Festival, Rapha made a limited run of BFF hats for the 2009 year! They came out really nice with embroidered details on a Rapha cotton biretta.
See more pics and purchase one over at the Rapha site!
It's a sad truth that with the highest density, NYC still falls behind 5 other US-cities and 2 Canadian cities in the ranking for "best to bike in". Nice design on the chart, horrible bike though!
The Architect's Journal has a nice article on a new book entitled Crap Cycle Lanes.
Description below:
Architects come up against short-sighted planning on a daily basis – not least when they get on their bikes
This charming book provides pictures of dozens of half-hearted, incompetent and dangerous cycle lanes. Crap Cycle Lanes is available from the Eye Books website, Amazon or any good bookshop. The book was inspired by the Warrington Cycle Campaign and all royalties go to the Cyclists Defence Fund.
Looks pretty good. Anyone got similar stories or pictures? Post them in the comments!
Julius Reeves took this shot of Tony Fast doing an air-to-fakie on the volcano in Philly. You can't miss it in the new COG magazine either, it's right on the inside cover!
Once again, I'm posting pics from Shiba Friday in Tokyo. Sexysushi just upped some new shots and they're really epic. I'm sure by now everyone's sick of seeing these kickers, but whatever!
Nasty's barspin
I have no idea how he pulled this off. Look at his hands!
Ted's no-hander
... and once again, Super Ted with a nice no-handed air.
Chris turns it up a bit this week after taking a spill at Peel Sessions. He's got 1080 rollouts, sliders to switch nose pivots and almost 180's the 4 set at Union Square. Looks good man!
Andy at Fyxomatosis has continued to post more pics from Tokyo over on his blog. Head over and check it out. It's directed at the ladies of the cycling world: all pictures of dudes on bikes, smiling. Well, there's one pic of Odge from Shop 14 & Fixed Gear London's ass as he 180's the Shiba kicker.
Not to mention you get to see Super Ted's crazy eyes!
Keep watch for more Tokyo posts from the Track Cunt himself...
After posting about the Desired Hearts x Volume collaboration last week, the guys throwing the event send me the official flier. Sounds like a rad time.
Rock the Republic is a 3-day (Oct.15-17) music and art festival in downtown Bryan, which is adjacent to us in College Station. They are calling it a "Spectacle of Sight and Sound". There are tons of different live band playing, all of them being from Texas. There is also a stomp competition, a benefit walk, and slam poetry. The cycling events are the main events for Saturday the 17th. There is an alley-cat race starting around 2 pm, followed by live music during the bmx and fixed freestyle comps. The map for the race will be posted sometime this coming week on Third Coast Fixed. The local 20" guys are building I think 3 quarter pipes, a wedge, a grind box, and they will be bringing their huge lake jump ramp also.
The Fixed freestyle comp prize is the one of a kind Volume Cutter. There is also multiple bags, gift certificates, clothing, other components, and a Fuji Track frame for the race and BMX comp. Most of the clothing and two of the bags are being made here in Texas by small independent companies. i.e.: DUAL, EYESORE, Black Gold Cycling, Double A Caps, Subzersive Cycling, The Byke Project.
You might have caught a premature post I made this morning about the London to Paris video up on All or Nothing Productions, because of scheduling conflicts, I had to take it down. Well, if you didn't catch it, here it is again with more information!
'London to Paris', directed by Grace Ladoja, documents 10 riders from all over the world making the track bike journey from London to Paris to meet Lance Armstrong as the Tour De France 2009 comes to a close. Made in association with Nike Sportswear's CTRS project, the film's NYC premiere is set for late October 2009...for stages09.com
About the shoe/ Nike
“Eight hand-picked bicycle riders from around the world came together this Summer for one cause: LIVESTRONG. Each cyclist created their own version of the Nike Air Zoom Tiempo, a footwear style based off of the popular soccer shoe, but newly adapted specifically for city cycling. Bonding over color swatches and carbon frames, seven of the eight guys took on their own challenge, a journey across the European countryside on fixed gear bikes. The crew rode from London to Paris to attend the STAGES art show with Lance on June 26th, where just a few hours earlier he completed the last stage of the Tour de France.
London to Paris, 220 miles, 3 days, fixed gear bikes...What’s the worst that could happen?”
Not only does this use one of my favorite songs as the soundtrack, it features some great cinematography and the guys from Velo Cult! Love'n it. Good job guys.
From their blog:
This video is made of random clips from our post-Interbike camping trip. Some of the places we rode were Bodie, Mammoth, Bristlecone, Mono. The bikes in the video are a Bontrager cross bike, Kelly cross bike, an old Raleigh and a Mondia.
NYC skate / sneaker / clothing shop Dave's Quality Meat has a new website. DQM New York launched recently and they've got their new lookbook up on the front page. Bros, Bikes and Beer. Just the way I like to spend my Fall weekends.
... and don't forget, Saturday DQM will be re-stocked on the Nike CTRS City Tiempos. Get there soon because they didn't get a lot!
COG Magazine 07 is shipping! Expect to see it was your LBS within a week or so. If you don't have a LBS that stocks COG, ask them 'why not?' and if they still won't, head over here to the webstore and pick a copy up!
I cannot get enough of these photos that Camilla shot at the 2009 L'Eroica. I can only hope when I'm old and have seen many miles on the road that I can continue to pull my ass onto the saddle and log more.
Here, Valeriano Falsini, Coppi's Gregario, at 81 inspires us to be heroic.
Yeah! Nice little edit of Wonka and other riders. Big-ass 180-bail in the beginning, some nice 360s, 3 taps and wallrides. Looks like a fun spot to spend the day riding.
One of the days that I was healed up enough to ride, Rip Zinger set up a meeting with Nike Japan to do some shooting of me riding throughout Tokyo. I was still injured at the time and wasn't really feeling like riding, but Rip is a world-renown photographer and I couldn't pass up the opportunity!
A nice little wallride spot I found. We only got one run in at it though.
Traffic was dense in Tokyo. Comparable to NYC.
It's actually legal to ride on the sidewalk there too. Sometimes it's the only way to get to a spot.
Found a nice bank in Shibuya with a pretty steep hip. I got a nice 3 tap off it and a flared out 180 on another bank, a few blocks away.
picture by Rip Zinger, click for full-resolution
This sidewalk made a nice little hip. Perfect for blasting a 180 out of it.
Thanks so much for your time Rip! Come back to NYC and we'll hang out!
Andrew Gura is a Los-Angeles based director and photographer. He's been experimenting with Anamorphic video by using his beautiful track bikes as subjects. This first one is of his Carlton flyer track frame.
It's a pretty lame fight, but it's still pretty funny that it escalated from some harsh language to dry-humping in an intersection so quickly. This kind of altercation probably happens frequently. Drivers get pissed at cyclists, yell at them, the cyclist yells back, maybe someone throws something or hits the other and that's usually it. But this time, a Fox news reporter was there to catch all the action!
That joke will never get old! I think this was taken right before I bruised my heel and sprained my ankle the first night in Tokyo. Shiba Friday rules. We need to make a Peel Sessions kicker pair! Maybe that can be my project.
A bit back, the French electro band Rafale was looking to make a video about bike messengers in NYC. Their producers got in touch with the Empire riders to help out. Well, here's the final edit. You'll recognize a few people in there, including Wonka bunny-hopping onto a car.
While Zack from Open bicycles was busy hunting down a motorcycle for a Winter project, he decided to play a practical joke on the internet. Don't believe the hype kids! It's not true.
Chris ups his game and gaps the 6/7 set on the South Side and then works on 180'ing the 3 set at the Bridge Park. Keep it up homie. Nice job catching the popped tire!
Some pictures have surfaced from the Buffalo guys behind VéLOrue. I really like this one a lot. Keep ripping guys! I know it's already cold up in B-flo!
When I get IMs like this at 1:30am I know it's gonna be good...
Tony: GOT A VIDEO FOR YOU FAGGOT
Sent at 1:23 AM on Friday me: where? Tony: IM EMAILING IT TO YOU
POST IT ON YOUR VIMEO IF YOU LIKE
SUCK DE BALLZ me: ok
hah Tony: I USED CAMRON
HAHAHA
Some Serious lines in this. Tom's barricade hop at the end and his massive double step are beyond impressive. Tony's back at it, after being out all Summer with a broken leg and this is also the first video with Drew Leshko in it. Good stuff all around.
They took Ellen's sneak peek at the 2010 Mishka Calander (NSFW!) and used some creative licensing on it. Clever guys!
I met the Phoenix crew at the 100% Pure Fighter comp in Tokyo. They've not only got a trick fork on the market, but a lot of talented riders and a great blog. Make sure you follow them here and keep up on the haps in Tokyo.
I already miss Ted and his pirate jokes, massive airs and habitual drinking. Sexy Sushi has a nice little series with Ted and Gekishi up on his Flickr, so head over and checkem out.
David Rowe was the director behind Fast Friday. He's now got his sights set on L.A. Introducing the first teaser for David Rowe’s new film documenting Los Angeles’ fixed-gear cycling community: TO LIVE AND RIDE IN L.A.
Once again I missed Chris' Week 7, so head over and catch it. Check out Week 8 in Chris' Turning Tricks series and if you haven't caught the previous videos before, here's a run down on his weekly video project:
"My name is Chris Layda, and this is my weekly video series called ‘Turning Tricks.’ Every week I try to learn at least one new trick, combination, or line. This series is meant to document my progress as a freestyle fixed gear rider.
This video marks 2 months of Turning Tricks. Not only is there new week 8 footage, but there is also a look back to some of the tricks learned this month as well as some unseen clips from various locations. Tricks from the month include: ledge and stair gaps, bunny hop to wheelie, bunny hop bar spins (bhbs), wheelie to nose pivot, rollout (keo) variations, 3 and 540 cabs, big spins (prolly spins), 3 taps, and possibly more… Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for next week."
So Cal has a big fixed scene and this new Palms Cycles fixed gear video "Behind Bars" documents part of it. 20 Second mark is ill and those are some young riders! Can't believe how quickly the groms are catching onto this stuff.
I wanted to post this the whole time I was in Tokyo, but couldn't get around to it. AJ & Eric murder shit. If you haven't already seen this, be sure to watch it. Third Coast is killing shit. That last 180 stair gap was so fucking smooth! Big ups Eric and AJ. Eric, mend to that knee man and I hope you're feeling better soon!
Wilson Tai from Metrotuned just sent me his video interview with Marty of Geekhouse bikes. He also got to interview Chris Igleheart of Fat City Cycles fame. Great video! Good job Wilson.
Such a great time. Proper song too. Much smaller crowd this night, which was nice. It was a perfect way to end my trip to Tokyo. I was finally riding better, since most my injuries had healed up. My ankles were both bruised still, so I wasn't trying to go crazy. At the end of the night I fell hard on my foot, fucking it over pretty well. I had a bone poking out, which I popped back in place.
So I went to the hospital tonight with Tak, Yohey and Sada. 1 Hour in the ER and a small amount of money when compared to US healthcare to find that my foot is fractured and I'll be off the bike for a bit. Small fracture in the big toe bone and a minor dislocation. If I hadn't popped it back in place at Shiba park, It would have been a painful night.
Tomorrow is my last day in Tokyo. Most of which will be spent traveling to the airport and packing. See you in NYC next week!
Big ups to CMWC, Shiba crew, YO!kohama Fixed Gear, Wbase, Fish & Chips, Homework, 3Bancho and all the others who rode with me this trip. I'm already missing you all! Keep riding and keep killing it! Marco, Nasty and Toku need to come to NYC!
Fixy Life is a great guy, so make sure you follow his blog!
Shiba Friday was such a blast! Met all the Japanese tricksters! Nasty, Toku, Kyoichi, Fixika, Malco, Homework and others. Super stoked to be here guys! Thanks!
Even though I hurt my ankle on my first night, I still had fun. Now I have to ice my ankle down every 3 hours. Sucks!
Turning Tricks 6 looks like it was shot in L.I.C. Chris is learning some new tricks here including bunnyhop barspins, 540 cabs, full cabs and hop to wheelies. Some nice lines. How do you not get kicked out of that spot man? Every time I go there, the guards kick me out within 5 minutes.
Yeah yeah yeah, I know, you've already seen this. The new Fixed Magazine is out now. If your LBS doesn't carry the hard copy, you can download the pdf here, at their site.
Along with Wonka making like 30 cameo appearances, there's a NYC-by-numbers piece by me and a nice article on the Revival. Tom Briggs, of Skitch clothing talks about what brought the project about and the initial cancellation that almost ended the film. What hit me the best was the line about how and why people work on video projects in the first place. Tom sums it up pretty well:
"I remember watching bmx videos as a kid and thinking it would be amazing to be a part of a project like that. I guess that idea never really died and that's what got us here today."
Well put man! Be on the watch for more Revival updates at the Skitch blog.
COG is putting on the 2009 CMWC Tokyo anniversary installation this week. If you're going to be in Tokyo this Friday night, make sure you check it out. I'll be there, so come shoot the shit with me. I know Kevin Sparrow, aka the "Boy Wonder" will be lurking taking pictures.
I don't usually post BMX videos too often, but this has got to be the best web edit I've seen in a long time. Straight littered with bangers. Insanity!
Nice little montage of the Christie St. polo pit players. No idea if this was a tournament or not, but that's usually the amount of people hanging out on a Sunday afternoon.
Reason #1 why I like gussets. This frame was destroyed by putting a BMW fork on it. The increased leverage from the longer ATC and general beefiness causes stress fractures and cracks at the HT / DT / TT cluster. Like when I toasted my Surly Steamroller last year.
At least he wasn't hurt!
By the one, the only Sexysushi! See ya next week man!
Anson is BMW's 24" ACL rider. Dude's super smooth and goes big all the time. We've ridden a few times and his vibe is always positive. Really pushes people to do their best. Here's a new web-edit he did for Brooklyn Machine Works.
Every time I see a dude blasting a bowl's vert, I think of Tony hitting the over-vert at FDR two years ago. With all their momentum, big dudes like Tony, this guy and myself get moving fast!
Kelly Brook is the new spokeswoman for London's new cycling campaign, Skyride. Read two of their quotes below.
Kelly Brook said, “I’m not really feeling that athletic but I do ride my bike on a regular basis, I do love cycling. It’s just a fun day out, it’s for everyone of all ages and all standards of cycling.”
Mayor Boris Johnson added, “Have a go and remember you don’t have to go too fast. I always cycle in a suit, I barely break into a sweat, I scarcely perspire I go so slowly. The danger is not behind you, it’s in front of you so be aware.”
Here's the story. I was having brunch on first ave and first street with a a couple of friends including Alfred .It was a pretty sunny day and a good there was a good amount of pedestrian traffic .Nothing unusual. Alfred went out to make a call and spotted someone looking over his bike. Nothing unusual ,he got a hot ass cannondale with hot ass wheels.the guy was average looking, had a helmet and a bag.looked like your average joe casual biker.Suddenly this dude gets on his knees and pulls out a drill. At first Alfred thought he wanted to steal his wheels, until he saw the drill. Is this what it has come out to?!people stealing bike with drills?Anyways as he was getting ready to drill the ulock,Alfred comes in the restaurant and yells,!yooooo someones trying to steal my bike, lets go get him.and let me tell you this ass hole tried stealing the wrong bike.first it was a bike messengers bike and second it was Alfred's bike and the motherFkr got a temper sometimes.so we roll out to this dude and start pounding him.my first instinct was to get my U lock and bang on him,but my bike was already locked up so , we bumbrushed this dude and started pounding him.Everybody is watching and wondering why this dude is being plumeted ,but at that point we don't give a fuck.we had to make sure this asshole dosen't do it again.me personal i have had 2 bikes stolen,in like a month apart.fuck that shit.he did't even look like a bike thief!so while pounding him i reach out to put my phone in my pocket and realized i had a camera on my wait.i pulled it out and captured the second half of the beating!
Sorry it's so hard to read, but you get the idea.
I fully support this, unlike the u-lock justice video, this guy deserved what he got. Note that the guys who jumped him, didn't over-do it. They landed a few kicks and one or two punches. The guy wasn't bleeding or banged up. Just enough to send a message. DON'T STEAL BIKES. Cops won't do anything and this guy will think twice about stealing bikes.
Juliet and Posy are featured in this month's i-D Magazine. The photos were shot in Jack's loft in Bed Stuy during their last trip to NYC by Sam. The three girls had a blast when they were here and I'm sure they'll be returning soon.
Here's a beautiful Eddy Merckx from the late 80's. Looks like a mix of Super and Nouvo Record. Pantographed chainring and non-fluted Super Record cranks, just like on my Corsa Extra. Great build!
Tak was kind enough to ask me to shoot some pictures for an editorial on Brooklyn for LOOP Magazine. He took portraits of the Peel Sessions crew and Jeremiah and I at the McCarren pool bank.
"It's the 2 wheel culture - doesn't matter if it's a mtb, bmx, track bike, fixie, no matter what it is, we all experience the same thing riding through the city... Just something about bikes man."
Well put and such a great video. Worth the watch. Keep ripping Nigel! He's always one of the first people to say hey at the BK Banks and no beef with fixed gears whatsoever. Such a nice guy.
Seriously, watch the whole thing. There are a ton of clips, cameos and other tidbits. Interbike '08 complete with a shot of Affinity's booth. Bike polo, track bikes, messengers and even a story about Ghost Bikes.
Konaworld.com made a video about riding a bike in Amsterdam. I gotta admit, it really makes me want to travel back to Holland. Such a great country. Every city is unique and people everywhere ride bikes. Not enough vacation days in the year!
I know this has been everywhere but I still wanted to post it and say congrats to Tyler. He's been ripping hard for a while now and I'm glad to see him getting hooked up! Here's his Leader 729 Trick Star frame.
Here's the bike in action! Nice 180 bar on a bank. One day I caught shit for saying a 180° bunnyhop was a 270°. "It's either 180° or 360° John!"
Urban Velo has released issue #15. Pick it up at your LBS, or read the pdf here. This publication has come a long long way and I really love what Brad and Jeff are doing. Keep it rolling guys!
In this video the Tokyo Bicycle Messenger Association gives some helpful tips. I cannot wait to go. Who's gonna be there? London? West Coast? Oz? Be sure to watch this video and read below as Eli Tokyo Jitensha-Jin gives some tips:
TKBMA (The Tokyo Bike Messenger Association) is putting the final touches on their preparation for CMWC (Cycle Messenger World Championship) 2009 in Tokyo, Japan. For those of you planning to come, we hope you've already registered online and have gotten yourself some plane tickets.
A lot of good advice for your visit to Japan can be found at cmwc2009.com (click on the English button). This video includes some other useful info. Like how to use one of Tokyo's many old style "squatter" toilets. Also:
*Nudity is illegal, so keep your clothes on.
*You can bring your bike on trains and subways, but only if it's in a "rinko" bag (cloth bicycle transport bag) or a box.
*You can drink the tap water.
*You must ride on the left side of the road.
*You need to be careful of "mama-chari" (grandma/housewife bikes) which most people in Japan ride. Many mama-chari riders don't pay attention or follow basic traffic rules and are a real danger to themselves and others.
*You can find cheap and fun ready-made ninja food at convenience store located everywhere (all open 24hrs).
*In September the weather will be quite warm and humid. But, bring some rain gear if you have some, because typhoons and sudden rain are fairly common.
*It's legal to drink on the streets and just about anywhere in public, but please be responsible and don't drink and ride.
I'd also like to include some of my own advice:
*Tokyo's streets are insanely confusing. Unless you plan to always be riding around with a local, a good map is a must. I think the only bilingual map worth its weight is "Tokyo City Atlas" published by Kondansha International. You can buy it at Amazon.
*Legally, foreigners must have their passports on them at all times. Unless you live here, in which case you must have your foreign registration ID card with you at all times. It's possible for foreigners to wind up spending a night or two in jail simply for not having their passport on them. But, the police are really really nice here for the most part and are good at giving directions if you need them.
A new project from the UK is brewing. Read up below:
This is the official trailer for our forthcoming fixed gear bike film 'BÖIKZMÖIND'.
Shot in Bristol, UK with a near army of fixed gear cyclists, the film will focus on the culture and social aspects of the scene here in the South West.
This trailer which premiered at the second 'No Gears' night at Bristol's Cube Cinema on Monday 31st August 2009, represents the first footage to be shown from hours of material gathered so far.
The full film will be released sometime in 2010.
Shot on a JVC Everio HD3 with a Century Optics Wide Angle Lens and various mounts for on bike filming as well as a JVC Everio HD5 with JAG35E DOF adapter and 50mm f1.4 Canon Lens.
Directed by Gavin Strange ( jam-factory.com )
Filmed & Edited by Jonny Clooney ( makinov.com ) & Gavin Strange
Music is 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' by Edvard Grieg
Speaking of the Revival, here's a promotional video Wayne put together for the September 5th Warriors race!
Alright everyone. This is the layout for the Warriors race...
You will pick your team of four. You can pick anyone, guy or girl, just as long as you're prepared with your team of four. Teams may or may not need certain supplies - this is up to you and your gang. For example, you may want radios or cell phones to communicate. You might want bike tools, helmets, or any other shit that could help you along the way, if ya catch my drift.
Each team is given one manifest and every team member has to make it to every stop before your gang can advance to the next station, so protect your team by any means necessary! There will be a points system grading. This is based on time, the number of surviving gang members (on your team), and the number of opposing gang members your team has knocked off. You knock off other team members by ripping off their arm bands and registering your hit at the next station. If someone on that team takes one of your member's arm bands OR if your tag makes it to the station before the arm band carrier does, you cannot register that hit and you will not get points for it. Beware - this will cause chaos and paranoia so be careful and be strategic!!
There will also be other special hidden points you can collect along the way, but they are not required stops. For example, you might need to look for a hidden gang tag somewhere near the stations. Now, only one of your guys has to get the extra points so send out a ringer to collect the points and meet ya back at the next station!!!
Basically, the best time and most points wins this race, so it's a battle of speed, smarts and unity (with your gang that is!).
Registration is open as of now JULY 15th and will be closed September 1st at 11pm. To register please email your gang's name and the four racers' full names to V.bms@hotmail.com. Title this email "Come out and play." The $25/member, $100/team entry fee can be collected at the start of the race or dropped off anytime between 8 AM to 5 PM Monday to Friday at the Phantom Couriers office (B2 - 325 Howe Street). Get training and we will see ya all on the 5th at Surrey Central sssuuuuuccccccckkkkaaaaasss!!!
I'm so stoked on this past week. It's been a long time since I rode with a big group of influencial riders. The Skitch tour brought Wayne, of the Revival to NYC to shoot for the forthcoming film. I was honored when they asked me to join them.
The guys hung out with Torey and Wonka during the week, heading through Brooklyn and Staten Island. From what the guys said, I think the whole world is going to be blown away by the riding they captured!

I think it really kicked into full swing at Peel Sessions last week. A ton of people came out and generally, everyone had a great time. This weekend, we all toured through Brooklyn hitting spots and then finished off the weekend in Manhattan.
Thanks Wayne and Tom!
Check out the two Revival trailers after the jump.
I love using palettes to set up kickers and ghetto banks. They're an easy to find industrial by-product that construction sites usually just throw out. In the dead condo zone, they're super easy to come by. The guys in Japan revived the weekly Fun the Pista meet up and of course, Sexysushi was there, catching the action! Love this pic of Ko-Malco, mid-bunnyhop barspin.
Alex took the Silver at this year's Master Track Nationals. He also was chosen as one of the 8 athletes to partake in the Quest for G. Thousands of applicants, 16 chosen and 8 final contestants. Watch the episode here.
I think it's safe to say they made the right choice! If you're in NYC this weekend, head out to Kissena to see him tear the track apart!
No, Chris wasn't hanging out under the 59th Street Bridge, he was riding the Astoria Banks. We rode this spot a while back in the dead of winter. Remember them? Tom was blasting the hip on a Redline Monocog 700c fixed?
Nice line at the end. I know you can land that man...
So the Gnarcotix guys say that Taylor is going to bring "havok". Watch as he brings havok to this school yard tennis court. You can even hear children screaming in the background.
Matt aka Pedalpiff came to NYC for the Bicycle Film Festival this year. He and the Texas crew hung out with all the locals for the week of the festival. Because of the rainy weather we were having, we couldn't really ride that many spots, but we still had a good time.
Here's his edit, It's a little on the long side, but it's got some nice riding in it.
The Doneri crew really stepped it up a few notches. The 720 tap was awesome. These guys are moving fast too, which makes the tricks look 1000000000% better. Keep it up guys! Even the cinematography looks great.
Really really great edit of Chris' Summer riding. Bunnyhop Barspins on the ghetto bank for the win. Nice to see Jason gettin up on the edit plug too. Seattle!
Stevil Kinevil has launched his new blog, All Hail The Black Market into the World Wide Web. Be sure to check it out and follow it for all the goodness you know Stevil for.
Chris comes out to Peel Sessions every week. He has a trials background and picks up new moves frequently. To document his progress as a fixed gear rider, he has started a new series called "Turning Tricks". Heh.
NYC keeps getting transplants from SF. So far, everyone that's come over to the East coast has adapted quite well. Chris, aka Condition SF was the one behind the still camera lens during a lot of the filming for Macaframa. His pics were posted all over the place while Macaframa was in production.
Now that he's in NYC, he'll be riding all over the city, hitting different spots with his camera lens.
Bike Shorts X is approaching. $100 to the best bike-themed film. Not bad right? Get out your cameras and start shooting. The deadline for entries is September 20th with the premier on September 27th at Public Assembly in Brooklyn.
Fonseca released his entry to the 2009 Bicycle Film Festival. If you wanna see the final production of No Cassettes, it's for sale here, at his webstore.
CirockSF has some nice shots from a Gnarcotix photoshoot up on the blog. This one stuck out from the rest. Bars tweaked out. I love seeing people's game faces.
Chris Akrigg is no stranger to bikes. He is however a stranger to fixed gears. Here he is, giving it a go in one of his first sessions. Insanity throughout!
Check out this video from the 42 Below 2009 Bicycle Film Festival Goldsprints night in NYC. Watch to the end to see Luke lay it down. Put your shirt on meathead!
Grandmighty filmed the Gnarcotix guys talking about their bikes recently. Watch as Resil, Manny, Axel and Carl go over their bikes in detail. A lot of sticker bombs, collabos, prototypes, puking, wheelies, color coordination and camera-man giggles.
Originally from Massachusetts, Matt W. Moore has brought his fine-tuned, self-proclaimed "Vectorfunk" style back to the state with a well rounded body of work. His signature style canvas work, a departure from the norm into watercolor and collage work, as well as a small series of prints are hanging in the gallery. In conjunction with the traditional works, Matt has come together with Open and Traitor Cycles to present a series of five hand-painted frames, a cycling cap and t-shirt. Please visit the project's micro-site for a more in-depth look and to purchase select pieces of the Momentum project. Visit Momentum Site.
Show hangs from August 15th, 2009 to September 15th, 2009.
"The bike project and other skate/snow/surf projects are ideal. I’m working with brands I have a lot of admiration for. I’m immersed in the culture; painting a bike is native to me - I ride every day. I want people to ride these bikes, not hang them up because they‘re scared to ride them. I do plenty of work that can be only hung up. Shred this bike for 10 summers, then hang it up and say it had a life."
Matt W. Moore / Arist & Designer
"The time and effort to which Matt and Zack have put into this show speak volumes of their love for what they do. This is obvious to anyone who has stepped foot in Open or has been in the presence of Matt’s art. We hold the work done at Open Bicycle, Chorus Gallery and Matt in the highest regard and are thrilled to have been asked to be a part of this."
"Seeing a project go from conversation to completion is always great, especially when the outcome reaches a level far beyond what we all first imagined. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we have."
Brakeless.ca is a track bike shop and website focusing on increasing the scene in Montreal. They asked me a while back to answer a few questions and added me to their People page. Here's a recent video showcasing a Brakeless event.
I know these have been everywhere, but I really appreciate the scope of these videos. Berlin over the years has been dealing with fixed gear culture growing pains. Many messengers feel like their culture is dying with the popularity of fixed gear bikes. The Berlin police have been confiscating bikes and ticketing for riding brakeless. Many riders feel like fixed gears are under fire.
Keep me updated! Any chance of a US premier? Hit up FIxed City for more information.
Andy, Chris and I drove down to Philly today for a much-needed Slow Sunday. I haven't been since we were filming for Bootleg Sessions 3 and even though we only rode 2 spots, the 90-degree weather killed us all.
There were some great lines pulled today.
And Tom killed a massive gap 3 times. Seriously, you have no idea how long this is. Andy has more pics up on his Flickr, so checkem out!
Rode with Andy T. all day today, hitting spots in the neighborhood. First full day on the new bruiser. You can really feel the difference in weight between the production and the last prototype. It's such a well-handling bike.
A wallride spot I rode a year ago with Sam Miller and Tom. A lot different to ride it now. Not the best transition to the wall, but it's totally worth riding.
This bike is such a beast and it's got great clearance for bunnyhop barspins.
We set up a ghetto bank along the edge of the pool. There's a guard rail about 2 feet from the edge of the bank to gap. Fun times.
The space is eerie. It was, at one point, the largest public pool in the US.
Andy took a lot of detailed pictures of the new Bruiser, so check them out, along with others from today here!
I love watching Mosher fall. Ill lines. Fakie hop bars look good. I hear you're moving to NYC in a few weeks? Does that mean you'll be at Peel every week?
Not sure how I feel about slammed saddles and fixed gears. It's mostly because of how people look when they're sitting on a slammed saddle pedaling all the time. Just looks funny. One thing is for sure, the Japanese kids riding the fixed 26" cruisers (with 700c wheels) love it.
Marco lays down a smooth and steady line in this video.
Good clips from Wonka. A ton of bunnyhop barspins and a clean chainring grind on the flat rails off Havemeyer st. I haven't seen that kid in forever. Where you been Wonka?
If you don't know who Massan is, then get familiar. He's one of the most powerful riders out there and the only person who makes bombing hills on a track bike look like snowboarding down a mountain. His recent introduction to Macaframa was a hit, showcasing his super smooth and strong riding.
Between traveling all over and riding through the streets of NYC, he's found time to make a blog. Be sure to follow him here.
Nasty's got some of the most powerful full-cabs out of anyone on a fixed gear. Full and 540 cabs are my favorite tricks of the moment. Full cab sliders look dialed too. Definitely a fun trick.
Originally from Massachusetts, Matt W. Moore is bringing his fine-tuned, self-proclaimed "Vectorfunk" style back to the state with a well rounded body of work this weekend. Matt will be showing his signature canvas work, a small series of prints, as well as presenting a project in part with Open and Traitor Cycles - a series of five hand-painted frames, a cycling cap and t-shirt.
Matt is in the middle of a global gallery takeover, you can see images from his last show in Sao Paulo, Brazil here and expect to see him cross the Atlantic for a show this fall. Opening Reception is SATURDAY at 8pm.
Jake, aka = Laali = on Flickr, just posted his recently-developed pictures from his stay in NYC a couple months ago. Really great shots from Peel Sessions in there too, so make sure you checkem all out!
Vimby's been making their rounds to all the fixed gear events across the US. This episode takes us to Seattle where Future Tense takes place. Looking good guys. Great riding and filming.
... at the Austin Bicycle Film Festival street party. Puckett caught mid-air on a bunnyhop barspin to fakie and AJ nailing a 360 on the quarter. Bruiser's lookin good man!
Sasha has an ongoing series entitled Seen on the Street: NYC Bikes and Riders. It's a great little set he's been compiling over the past few months; candid bicycle photographs and the people who ride them. This one in particular stuck out tonight. Full spandex, sneakers and no helmet on a GT Pulse. Really amazing shot and I figured with all the female T&A floating around on the blogs lately (just playing Zack!), maybe the female readers would like to see some boy butt. Albeit spandex butt.
It's cool to see more and more cities spawn fixed gear scenes. One such city is Orlando. The blog of the 407 is 407 Fixed Gear and they just posted a new video to their site.
I also added them to the Connections page, so make sure you check them out!
"Other than that, this is pretty straight forward. There is one trick in here that took me forever to land, and that the 180 rainbow duck. This was seriously the hardest trick that I have ever attempted next to a wheelie 180. I am still not too proud of the Indian giving looseness of it all. I got really hurt, and dehydrated while filming it. Georgia summers are no joke."
Well, here it is. Joe from BMW and Pharrell present the Element & BMW project. I'm so stoked for BMW. The new bike looks great. The clothes aren't that bad either! Big ups guys!
Also, I had no idea Pharrell was so fucking funny to watch. HAH!
Life In A Box created this video for Boston, MA-based Independent Fabrications recently. Watch as the guys from IF talk about the design and birth of this bad ass street bike. Lookin good guys! IF always makes the nicest bikes.
I'm sure it's the same with most film projects in the fixed gear world; you end up working on things with your close friends. Luke has a nice slideshow up on the Empire blog covering a good 2 or 3 years of old pictures from the crew, prior to ever even thinking about making Empire. Head on over and check it out.
Burd made a nice little promotional edit for Milwaukee this past weekend. For all of you who were anxiously awaiting footage of Burd riding around, your day has come!
Jeremiah Jones, the brains behind Hold Fast, rocking the new proto straps and a prototype BMW fork over the coping at our new skatepark. I usually am not a fan of fixed gears in parks, but this park is so wide open and the transitions fit 700c wheels perfectly, so it looks pretty smooth.
... and Chris making his trick face with a barspin on the quarter.
Switch and Diplo are Major Lazer. If you haven't heard their debut LP, "Guns don't kill people, lazers do", then go out and get it. If you're a cheap ass, download the Mishka Keep Watch X mixtape. It's really good and FREE!
Here's their first music video, which is slightly NSFW and also up for a VMA! So head over to MTV and vote!
Manhattan Portage has been around for many years creating quality bags and messenger bags and for the recent Bright Trade Show, they produced a couple of short promotional videos featuring fixed gear riders from Fixed Gear London.
The video is fairly casual with riding and tricking taking place showing the riders in their own element. There are no heavy branding and the flow of the video compliments well with the back ground music.
Never seen this one before. It's gotta be possible to do without taking your foot off your pedal and grabbing your saddle. It'd be a lot cleaner in my opinion if you could just gturn into a slider. Somehow... hah!
Here's a video of the recently-opened Keirin Cycles in Miami. Nike and Thomas walk you through their shop and speak a little about its intent. Nice Paramount in there along with a lot of other bike porn. If you're in town, swing by:
Keirin Cycles LLC.
235 A 9th Street
Miami Beach Florida 33139

Tyler from Independent Fabrications has a really great portrait section up on his site featuring the messengers from the 2009 NACCCs. Some really great ones in there, so make sure you checkem out.
I think this video leaked a little prematurely this weekend while I was in Boston. I saw it on a few RSS feeds and it was immediately pulled. Looks like it's up for good now and the Maca blog welcomes Massan to the crew.
Epic video for sure. He's one of the few riders that makes bombing hills on a track bike look like snowboarding down K2. So fucking smooth. Not to mention the filming looks so dialed. You guys really nailed it!
There are so many pics from this weekend, I'll just continue to post them as I come across. octoPIST-n-SKquID has some good pics up from Saturday night.
I can't wait to ride at Shiba Friday in September, assuming they're still having it with the CMWCs going on. Looks like a good time. 26", BMX and fixed gears all riding around. Nice edit!
Orange 20 has some photos on Flickr from a project that has been in the works for a while now. Brooklyn Machine Works has teamed up with Element to produce the Brooklyn Element.
At a recent press release in LA, Pharrell and Joe premiered the new line and the new and improved Gangsta Track. I heard from the guys at BMW that they were making revisions and even developing a unicrown fork and the first prototype looks great.
Products break. It's bound to happen. I've broken my share of things and have slowly begun to dial in my bike over the past 2 years to match my riding. I've said it before and will say it again, wheels are the hardest thing to keep rolling. So far, there have been a few rims that have held up for me and many that haven't.
Kyoichi recently cracked his Chukker and all hell broke loose on his Flickr page!
It's tough to say whether or not it's "ok" to blast products online. Sure, people do it in other cycling sports, but with this Freestyle Fixed thing evolving so quickly, it's tough to say whether or not it's helpful. We want to encourage companies to make new products and believe it or not, it's a huge risk for them to experiment. I think both Kyoichi and Velocity handled this well in the end.
Fun little edit. Makes me wanna ride for sure. Also, I want to encourage more women getting involved with projects. If this becomes a full length, be sure to include Jen!
Check out what MWM just submitted to Open for their installation entitled Momentum at the Chorus Gallery!
MWM is on a roll at the moment - Wired loves his work and did you see his custom Mini Cooper? He continues to push his graphic look onto new forms. Take his upcoming show at Open’s Chorus Gallery, “Momentum,” which explores his graphics against a series of Traitor track bicycle frames. “In part with Open and Traitor Cycles, Matt will be presenting a series of five hand-painted frames, a cycling cap and some other soft goods. In conjunction with the frames, Matt will be hanging some of his signature canvas work.” We’re fans.
I know these have been everywhere, but my boy Richard from Stockholm sent them over yesterday and I never got around to posting them! Really great shots from Boon.dking. Stoked on the hop bar especially and you know I had to post the footplant. Mishka reppin!
This time on Gnarcotix, big boy Fonseca breaks his frame. Aluminum F41L! 4130 for life!
Pretty funny video, had me laughing. Although I do admit, I was secretly hoping for a catastrophic fail at some point. Maybe they're saving that for next time!
Bike Snob has a nice little article in the NYTimes and I've got a few quotes too. It's worth the read so head over and check it out.
John Watson, a bike blogger and fixed-gear enthusiast in New York City who goes by the nickname Prolly, said he was originally dismayed by the darts being thrown at his crowd. “At first I hated it,” Mr. Watson said. “You don’t know who this guy is, but he thinks he can take a look at your bike and make character judgments off of it.”
Over time, however, Mr. Watson gained respect for the Bike Snob. The two have exchanged cordial e-mail messages. “After you get used to his rantings, it’s a pretty amusing blog,” Mr. Watson said. “He actually takes the time to sculpt his postings every day.”
...It's a shame that they didn't use the quotes where I threatened his life at the hand of a Profile Race crank and sprocket battle ax!
Just got a nice package in the mail from Colby at Macaframa. Thanks duder! Stoked on the tall-boy coozie, stickers and shirt. Even more stoked on the ability to do this!
Check out this video as Plastician reflects on his 7 years over at Rinse.fm. Rinse is celebrating their 15th Birthday on the 31st. If you like what you hear here, hit up his show tonight!
I just had 3 of my friends ride cross-country and have some other friends in the process of doing so as I'm typing this. Touring seems to be more and more popular nowadays and with bikes at their highest point in decades, everyone seems to be moving across the country on 2 wheels, not 4.
For Thousands of Miles is a movie about documenting two rider's journey (talk about epic); as they ride cross-country, for thousands of miles (cue Family Guy reference). If this is going to be a full-length film, it'll be interesting to see how they fill the time up. It's gotta be more than just 60 minutes of riding.
26" wheels on a Starfuckers frame, no foot retention and what the hell was that in the beginning? Looked like a nose pivot cab or something. Kubota's got moves. Ever try nose-pivots without foot retention? Shit's hard. I've been watching his videos and he's getting a lot better. Good job man!
Very unnecessary. I'm not sure what happened, but taking a ulock to someone's face and head is way over the line. Seriously?
A car is one thing, but a person's face? From the Youtube page it seems as if the cyclist ran into the Asian man in the cross-walk. The Asian man tried to pick a fight with the cyclist and the cyclist just lays it out on him. Wow.
This video was uploaded Sunday and I'm sure it'll make the rounds soon enough.
"i made a pit stop in a starbucks somewhere on the lower east side and i saw this bike messenger and an old asian guy getting into a fight because they ran into each other at the intersection. the old guy just wouldn't leave the bike dude alone, so the bike dude totally let him have it, POW! KRYPTONITE LOCK TO THE FACE LIKE 3 OR 4 TIMES! Dudes face was actually bleeding hard core for like the next 20 minutes, but i bounced soon after. Crazy, and oddly enough the very next day i saw another fight in the street between two women and titties were flyin in that one, unfortunately i did not have the camera, bummer. Enjoy."
It's no surprise you guys are gonna keep breaking your axles. If you wanna grind, get a chainring / bash guard. Track hubs won't be able to withstand peg grinds!
Puck Ananta has some great pics up from the 2009 BFF in SF this past weekend. Looks like there was a bike swap going on at the same time. These wheels are beautiful. I hope someone snagged that deal. I woulda in a heart beat!
I know, I know, It's 12 minutes long, so be patient because there are some bangers in there, particularly from Teppei (11:40!) and Toku. I feel like the US is a whiles off from throwing an event like this. Look at all those riders having fun. Pretty dope set up.
Timing in the video breaks down as so:
00:11 ファンタジーレース 準決勝 (Keirin)
01:43 Fixed Trick Jam 準決勝
05:14 ファンタジーレース 決勝 (Keirin)
06:55 Fixed Trick Jam 決勝
I can't wait to go to Japan. I still need to line up a place to stay while I'm there. Anyone in Tokyo got a couch or a floor I can sleep on?
So, Jake loses control of his power grip around 40mph down a hill in SF. He BMX stops it and burns his leg in the process. 2:04 coulda been nasty. It looks like he almost loses it. Glad to see a helmet on your head man!
Is that the hill Hayes stomps out in Maca? Anyway, this definitely makes me wanna roll through SF real soon. Would take on a few hills on my Bruiser and everyone I've met from there has been a blast to hang out with. In fact, I think the only person I'd buck fifty would be B34N5. You hear that man?
Big ups guys! Mike and Greg from Mishka were interviewed on Fangoria recently. What's Fangoria? CLICK THE LINK to find out! It's a really great interview on the background of the brand. Peep into their demented minds!
“MISHKA started shortly after Greg stayed over Mikhail's house in Brooklyn. Greg had just got back from Europe and had purchased a very obscure Black Metal record from a band called Sacrifyx. A band who, it is rumored, died in a plane crash the night after recording their Black Metal opus. The rumor also claimed they buried a powerful prayer to Satan on the record. So of course the boys decided to play the record backwards. Soon after, a gateway opened up in Mikhail's bedroom. What happened after that not to many people are certain, but soon after MISHKA was born!”
Kris at Locked Cog got laid off. :-( But that means he has more time to ride and now's the time to do that. This summer people are getting crazy skills. I remember seeing Tom doing a 3tap over a manual pad in Bootleg Sessions 2. Tyler in Seattle did it a little bit later and now everyone's doing them.
Keep it up duder and good luck finding a job. Till then, it's unemployment time!
Ed Glazar and I met up in Greenpoint tonight to shoot this wall ride spot. I hit it at least 50 times and I'm in pain. He liked this one the best. The sky and composition is fucking great, but we all knew Ed was the man already!
It seems as though there's been more talk about Eddy Merckx bikes on this blog as of late, so apologies. Jeremy runs a site called Tears for Gears and was responsible for cracking the Merckx serial number system a bit back. His site is littered with incredible information and he too has a strong love for Merckx bicycles.
After I got my MX-Leader, we were discussing MAX (MXL's predecessor) and he informed me that he would be uploading a catalog from 1992. Very informative, so head over and read his site.
GOrilla has some great pictures up on their blog documenting Barry Forde racing. He's been a GOrilla rider for a while now. In fact, I think he's the first person I saw on their site a while back. Not sure what his UCI record is, but you can read more over at BarryForde.com
My friends Em and Mark have launched BICI planning. BICI stands for Bicycle Infrastructure Change and Innovations--Inc and is offering their services as bicycle planning consultants.
“We started BICI because we saw it as a logical extension of the work we did at the grassroots, community level, and the success we had empowering more people to ride bicycles,” co-founder Mark Simpson says. “Now that public institutions are recognizing the increased number of everyday-cyclists, we hope to lead them as they attempt to achieve institutional sustainability goals, and accommodate the needs of their cycling constituencies.”
No Brakes ATL recently celebrated their 2 year anniversary. Part of the celebration was opening their new shop in Grant Park. Here's a little time lapse video of their installation!
I caught the full-length at the NYC BFF and it's a really impressive movie. Ciocc talks about the inspiration for the GOrilla frame that Wonka is riding and allows Daniel Leeb of Cinecycle an in-depth look at his shop and process.
Be sure to catch the full-length when it comes to your city at this year's Bicycle Film Festival!
This stair set is massive. It's a long 6 and the landing isn't as long as you'd want it to be considering the speed you have to get in order to clear it. Ed told me about this last week. Glad to finally see the sequence!
Sexysushi never ceases to post the best pics coming outta Japan! Awesome image. Love the field on the right of the bank to wall. Great light! I wanna ride that spot!
The late Sam Mockbee established the Rural Studio in 1993 along with fellow architect D. K. Ruth. Sam passed away in 2001 but the spirit of the Rural Studio lives on to this day. Snakebit is a documentary on Sam Mockbee and his Rural Studio.
The Rural Studio gained recognition for recycling materials into homes for the local population. One of the more famous examples is the Rural Studio community center which used old car windshields for the fenestration and façade.
I know everyone's seen this already, but I still want to post it because it's pretty epic. Makes me wanna take my road bike out! Yeah, mentioning a road bike is kind of missing the point here, since they rode it fixed, but it should encourage anyone with a bike to ride further than their neighborhood's boundary.
Caspa and Rusko have brought a lot of much-needed energy to the dubstep scene over the past few years. They're no Kode9, Mala, D1, Bar 9, Loefah or even Vex'd but along with Skream, Plastician and others, Caspa and Rusko seem to be changing dubstep's sound.
Some hate it. I like it. I saw D1 a while back at Dubwar and people weren't really dancing. It wasn't emotional in the sense that people wanted to talk to you or dance with you. It was however moving in a very deep and dark way. The bass reverberated the floors and each beat made your chest reverberate. It was a completely new experience for everyone at the time but I don't see dubstep moving in that direction so much anymore.
When Rusko KILLED Studio B a bit back, it changed the way I looked at dubstep. I can only imagine how people are reacting to Caspa's newest Essential Mix. Banging shit man. Keep it up!

Chris shot this footage between the other two edits I put together for the Bicycle Film Fest week. It's all Wonka and Puckett riding in Queens. Some nice lines for sure.
“We all started doing tricks on these bikes because it was how we were getting around the city,” said John Watson, 28, an architectural intern who lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. “The benefit to these bikes is that you don’t have to go home and get your ‘trick bike.’ You can just stop and ride a little bit.”
Here you see the predatory 'Wonka' animal, hopping over the Hippo who was enjoying a quick drink at the watering hole. Enthralling!
Here are those shots I mentioned last night. Wonka's got insane ups. He not only 180'd it, but almost pulled a tuck-no-hander off it and he landed a few 3 hops. I hit it a few times. The last time, I tucked up high as hell and forgot to feather the landing. My wrist is bruised right now. Gotta heal up quick!
Crazy ish! BIG UP ANDY T. for the pics. See some more here.
Gshock's Web Magazine has information for a new gallery show opening today. If you're in Tokyo, be sure to catch it!
"History of Japan design for bikes"
2009.7.10 Fri. - 2009.7.26 Sun. [closed on Mondays]
11:00 - 19:00
IID GALLERY
organized by R bike, Silk Cycle
cooperated by Katakura-Kogyo, 5 LINKS, IID
IID GALLERY pleased to announce the exhibition about history of Japanese bicycle design, specially focused on Silk Cycle. Keirin started at 1948 and aimed to hold the official race at Tokyo Olympic Games. Japanese manufacturer didn't have any ideas about materials and processes to make competitive track racer. But craftsmen developed "Katakura Silk" the original track racer for the Olympic by themselves after trial and error. The exhibition shows the origin of the hand-made track racer through the frame for Tokyo Olympic Game. And, at the same time, Japanese folding bikes which is developed by the bicycle transporting culture will be exhibited.
"Having met a few years ago in Japan during the Tokyo leg of the Bicycle Film Festival, the last
two years have seen a furious exchange of ideas and countless samples as bag makers SAG and world famous fixed gear collective MASH SF set out to create the absolute best riding backpack around. We caught up with MASH SF’s Mike Martin and SAG’s Yoshimasa Onodera as they gave us a little background about both themselves, the bag’s execution and general thoughts on the increasing importance and popularity in riding."
More Summer edits! This was filmed prior to Justin breaking his tailbone. Heal up man! I'ma roll through in December to ride with you Texans and eat BBQ.
Kinda random, but I was always really really interested in projection-based installations on architectural facades. This project in particular is really well done. Perfect use of the fenestration and the masonry.
Via Shorpy, these pictures are from January 29, 1921 in Washington, D.C. "Herbert Bell and Joe Garso." were two one-legged cyclists who were most likely war vets (hence the missing legs) and took their love for cycling to a new height in the 1920's.
Some of these moves look familar, others will remain lost in time for obvious reasons...
I spent a lot of time in Rotterdam back in 2004. Lovely city. I really really want to go back. It's one of those cities in Northern Europe where I could see myself living at some point. Similar to Berlin, but different in the Architectural sense. The Nazis leveled most of Rotterdam, so there's no "historical preservation".
The result is a city with a skyline littered with MVRDV, UN Studio, OMA and other avant garde architectural masterpieces.
Anyway, there ALSO seems to be a growing fixed gear scene as well. Checkem' out here at Rotterdam Fixed Gear.
The Raven Feeders guys sent me this edit a bit back. They had hoped it'd be in the Bicycle Film Festival, so they didn't want to put it online. When it didn't make the cut, they uploaded it to Vimeo. Enjoy!
Filmed and edited during January/February of '09 by Donny Hall. This edit was the shorter cut of an 18 min trailer made solely for the bicycle film fest. Since it's filming the project has changed from a documentary focused around the College Station, Tx "Ravenfeeders" and now is a state wide trick video tentatively titled "Stick Yer Neck Out".
Since this submission was not accepted by the BFF we'd like to share it. enjoy.
Torey's back in Georgia. That kind of isolation gets maddening. When I go back to NC, I'm bored after 4 days or so. What would one do with all that extra time? Re-learn bar hops. 700c front too. They look just as good as any 650c bar hops I've seen.
Lookin good man. I'm sure it's sweltering hot there!
I got a nice little package from Kareem at Death Pedal today. Some stickers and the DVD. As soon as I got home, I popped it in and watched it. What I admire most about the project is the different kinds of riding. There are guys gapping stairs and guys doing skid tricks. Kareem even tracked down Innes Brunn, the renown artistic cyclist to put things in perspective.
My favorite clip is the kid who tries to gap the 10 set. Looks like that hurt man!
Overall the video turned out great. It's pretty rad seeing people still getting stoked on riding their fixed gears and track bikes however they want. I do have to ask though, what the hell is up with the ball in the cup game?
If you haven't ordered your copy, pick one up here!
Mr. Briggs from Skitch just sent me an email with the new Revival trailer linked. Check out what Tom has to say about it!
Due to the trip being cancelled last month Wayne has taken it upon himself to create a short precurser video to the main video project. Basically the short video will be out in November and is title The Revival presents Keep On Keepin' On. The project focuses on Seattle and Vancouver while the main Revival video that will be out early next year will be more broad and include both west coast and east coast riders. We were really bumbed about having to cancel the trip last month so suddenly and felt that it would be good if we put out something sooner rather than later and that's where Keep On Keepin' On came from.
Lookin good guys! Tyler, you're a fucking maniac. MANIAC!
Urban Velo #14 is now live online for your viewing pleasure. Make sure to check it out here. Some great content as always. Carney's rail makes an appearance and I'm gonna try the penny spanner trick. Looking good as always guys!
Last weekend Chris and I rode around Manhattan with Andy T. He was on his BMX and we were on our fixed gears. I hit the ledge drop at the health dept. We rode around looking for new spots to ride. The spots in Midtown were busts (surprise surprise) and we found some new places that would have been ill to skate, but too tight for 700c. It was great riding through the City on the weekend though. Always refreshing.
Here's a shot of Andy grinding the GC ledge. Kid's getting better!
Clive has a pink, all-in-one lycra leotard, and doesn't see why he ought to be ashamed about that. His bicycle cost many thousands of pounds, and is made of the same sort of stuff as badminton racquets. Clive rides his bicycle every day but, at the weekend, instead of cycling at high speed to his job in the City, he'll cycle at high speed to a bicycle shop. Here, he will spend many more thousands of pounds having bits removed from his bicycle, and replaced by other bits that are almost, but not entirely, exactly the same. Clive's bicycle lives in the living room, in front of the television. He has no wife.
The Sit up and Beg Biker
They don't go very fast, these bikes, but Emily didn't buy hers to get around quickly. She bought it because she liked the leather saddle, and the pretty basket. At first, she used to cycle around staring at the clouds, but the dentist won't let her do that any more. Emily's boyfriend constantly nags her about cycling in ballet pumps, and says she ought to wear some neon lycra. Emily always smiles, sweetly, but she's quite happy in her muted flowing asymmetrical skirts. Although her hems do get caught in the chain.
Where is the fixed gear rider illustration? Just this:
The Fakenger
Lee actually does IT for a small accountancy firm in Fitzrovia, but you would never guess that if you spotted him cycling to work from his home in Hackney. In his camouflage shorts and his cut-off tights, with his bag strapped up high on his back and his special shoes that don’t let him take his feet off the pedals, ever, he’s a dead ringer for a bona fide cycle courier. His bike has no gears and no brakes, and is festooned with tatty bits of string and masking tape. When Lee sees a bicycle with wheels that are thinner than his own it sends him into a powerful rage. He’d be a real cycle courier if he didn’t get lost so much.
Last night was the beginning of Shark Week in Philly. To start the weekend off proper, Tony and Drew threw the first Water St. Sessions Trick Comp. Looks like a lot of people showed up and some dude named Soap and Wonka stole the show.
Wonka bank to wallride
Looks like a blast. Check out the rest of the pics here at Gar1s0n's Flickr.
Not much info on this video project. Seems like he's a guy from SF who's momentarily in NYC shooting a project about his journey to Tokyo and Osaka.
Am I on point here? Or way off? Anyway, that's my morning commute. Delancey is one of the funnest streets to smash on in the morning. Nicely shot guys!
Ed took some really great shots from the 2009 BFF Goldsprints party last Friday night. Doc Stiles crushed everyone who stepped up to the plate. Look at that Charles Manson intensity!
Matthew Hodson just sent me these illustrations he made inspired by a bike race. Pretty great. Really love the backgrounds. Make sure to click the image for full resolution. Thanks Matt!
Japan-based Loop Magazine has been tailing the No Cassettes crew for the past few weeks documenting the final days of production of the SF-based project.
Here's a sample of some shots they took during this time period and make sure to head over to the No Cassettes blog to check out more! Also keep watch next week for the final trailer.
OM playing "Flight of the Eagle" off the Conference Of The Birds LP. I am blown away by Emil Amos' contribution to the band, even though he's no Chris Haikus. For those who are unaware, Sleep split into two bands when they broke up, High on Fire and OM.
Both are still great bands and you can find shared characteristics between them. Big thanks to my favorite Hesher blog, ΩߪĮĐĬΔŊ ΘБΣĿΪŜҜ
Read the full article now because I'm not sure how long they keep their articles up online over at the Huffington Post. This captures the spirit of the editorial...
But this journey is not one that can be undertaken in a car - you'd miss the details, the human scale, and the pace of life as you fly by. Even walking won't do - you won't be able to cover nearly enough ground. To really get to know New York, you've got to ride a bicycle.
There are moments in your professional career where you encounter pure inspiration. For me, this came in the form of the Dutch firm MVRDV's work. When I was in Holland 5 years ago, I rode across the country visiting all of their completed work. Coming out of school and seeing design-intensive, theoretical work actually built, not just talked about was just what I needed to push myself.
Check out this interview with the Dutch Architects as Deutsche Welle TV chats with directors Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and the owners of the Didden Village house, and mentions of the works Westerdokeiland, Rotterdam Market Hall, Parkrand and others.
Chris Habib, aka Visitor Design is a rare find. He's one of those native-NY'rs who has crazy stories about growing up in the art scene here. Not only has he filmed Sonic Youth on numerous occasions, but he supplied / designed rugs for some of Richard Kern's most provocative photo shoots.
He made this for me, both in digital and stencil form and I am beside myself. Unfortunately, it's a little too NSFW to be the banner for the site. But thanks Chris!
Wonka's one of the few fixed gear riders who fits into a BMX video quite well. This one by Scott Marceau is a prime example. Cameo at 1:20. Some good footage of Darryl killing it inside Post, the Wburg bmx shop.
I've been working with Mike Jones and Mikhail at Mishka for a few weeks now on this logo. They finished it up last night and I'm beyond stoked on it. Thanks duders. I also wanna thank everyone who's ever told me I look like a Viking, because that was the inspiration. Big ups guys! Expect some more related news to come shortly!
Last weekend we all swung through the Brooklyn Banks for Thrashbike 2009. A 26" competition. Kids came from all over and as you can see, were killing shit! Who's that at the :30 second mark?
1 of ? many edits from NYC's 9th annual Bicycle Film Festival. We rode around for one day and shot a few clips. Nothing crazy, just some fun riding. More to come!
Riders:
Eric Puckett (Volume)
John Watson (Milwaukee)
Without our dad's we wouldn't be here riding our bikes. So in honor of our dad's Outlier and Prolly Is Not Probably are teaming up Brooklyn style to create #OPFD, the Father's Day Contest to win free shit shorts. That's right, Father's Day basically marks the start of summer and we are giving away a pair of Outlier's Summer Shorts.
Step 1: Cut a hole in the box.
If you don't have a twitter account, get one.
Step 3:
Use all your resources to come up with the best picture of a dad you can find. Bonus points if it involves bikes, cracks us up and all around creativity. But really anything goes, the winner is whichever photo we think we like the most.
Step 4:
Post it to your twitter account and use the hash tag #OPFD in your post (That stands for Outlier Prolly Father's Day.) This is how we track all the pics.
Step 5:
That's it. On Father's Day we pick the best one and if you've won we'll send you a direct message on Monday. Best picture will get posted and you'll win a pair of the Outlier Summer Shorts. Easy.
