Fixed Freestyle: Evolution or Revolution?

UV_ff-PINP.jpg

I recently wrote a follow-up article on fixed freestyle entitled Fixed Freestyle: Evolution or Revolution? for Urban Velo. Maybe you remember the last one entitled Fixed Freestyle Evolution? Here's the opening paragraph:

It’s no secret that cycling is an ever-evolving sport. When broken down into specific species of bicycles, one can track their phenotype by a time period. Rigid mountain bikes, steel road bikes and tank-like BMX bikes are all signifiers of their place in history. Evolution in cycling, just like in nature, occurs when natural selection takes hold.

Make sure you check the rest of the article out here and pick up Urban Velo 21 soon at your LBS! Seriously, Ed's photography is so bad ass!

Dave Beard: Gus Sprocket Stall Barspin

Any time you team Dave Beard up with Gus, you know good shit will come from it. Take this recent photo Dave shot of Gus doing a sprocket stall to barspin. Good times!

Shakes O'Meara: All City Championships Photos

Taylor180-PINP.jpg

It's kinda insane to see the momentum at which the FGFS scene is growing. With each event, the bar gets raised higher and higher. Like Taylor's massive 180 toboggan illustrates, it's almost unbelievable how fast all the riders are progressing. The All City Championships this year was the perfect catalyst for progression and Shakes O'Meara was there catching all the action. Check out this and other photos at his Flickr!

Wrawh: Gus Full Pipe

Metal! Satan! Full pipes! Wrawh. Here's a track for Torey in case he's never heard it. The originators of "black metal" and one of the most evil bands of all time. You can't fuck with Venom!

Venom "In League With Satan"

I remember the first time I heard this album when I was 15 at the skatepark. As I was skating the bowl this song came on and I got goose bumps. Soon I had a friend make me a cassette mixtape of Venom's album Welcome to Hell. Such an influencial album and since I slept on my Tuesday Teardown post, this'll do!

Brenton Salo: Tyler Johnson Gap

I love this photo of Tyler hitting a ledge to rail gap. Even though the architect in me hates how the handrail and retaining wall aren't parallel. Oh well! Go check out the rest of Brenton Salo's photos from Tyler's trip to Portland here!

The City Sleeps: Biking Across the Brooklyn Bridge

BrooklynBridge-PINP.jpg
Photo by Keith Bedford for The Wall Street Journal

This is awesome. From the Wall Street Journal:

The Wall Street Journal sent several photographers out overnight to shoot the city during the hours when most of its citizens are sleeping.

I fucking love my city! Even as the City Sleeps.

Raymond Jones: Post Maltese Memorial Road Race

RayJones-PINP.jpg

"The Maltese Memorial Road Race was Paris Roubaix style" as Ray puts it. Raymond Jones has shot numerous photos of cyclists in the NYC area. He shot the photos for my COG Magazine interview, both the NY Times' pieces on the Peel Sessions piece and on Empire. Lately, he's been putting in work on the road bike in races. These photos, posted to his Flickr are so fucking rad. People who say roadies don't put in work have never raced!

Nice job dude.

Doug D's Bridge Battle 2010 Photos

DougDBridgeBattle-PINP.jpg

NYC's Bridge Battle is one of the most grueling alleycats in the US. Yesterday, a ton of racers came out to give it their best and Doug from Hardcourt Bike Polo was there with his camera shooting photos. Check out his set here and the checkpoints below.

Pedal Day: Nasty's Contorted 700c Fixed Hop

NastyContort-PINP.jpg

Hell fucking yes. Like Kama Sutra in cycling, Nasty's high hops on his 700c (don't limit me) Durcus 1 are an entanglement of limbs and bike. At a recent Pedal Day event, he came pretty close to clearing this ridiculous height. So gnarly! I love how he goes to the side, rather than to the back like LaMarche. Ain't no style biting here!

Fixed Gear Plus: Adam Belleshiem 180

fixedgearplus-PINP.jpg

Fixed Gear Plus, from what I can gather is a fixed blog from Houston. I started finding their photos on Flickr recently and this one of Adam doing a 180 and losing his hat is one of their best shots. Check out the rest of their photos right here.

Brenton Salo: Summer Days

Skidding through a puddle is the best. Especially if you can soak a pedestrian in the process. I'm only kidding of course. Brenton Salo captured Jerry Jackson whipping into some puddles during a hot and hazy summer afternoon. He's got a few more up on his Flickr, so head on over!

Happy Friday the 13th

Maybe the reason for all the weird posts today is the fact that it's Friday the 13th. In the spirit of cycling, this photo from Ziggy P Sports Photography is perfect for this unlucky day. As we've seen before, racers often invert their race number if they just so happen to pull the 13 to reverse the bad luck that accompanies it. That's one lovely photo.

Dave Beard: Gus Curved Wall Ride

So apologies to everyone who was expecting posts today. Our internet was down all day and I actually took the time to put some miles in on the road bike. Anyway, coming into a day's worth of emails and other content is usually overwhelming but there's so much good shit today. First up is Dave Beard's photo of Gus hitting a curved wall ride. That looks like Gus is actually pedaling too! Dope. Legit wall rides on fixed gears rule.

Nice photo Dave!

Brenton Salo: Climb Hills

Stand and muscle it out or sit and push it are the two ways to climb hills. Brenton Salo captured the beauty of the climb perfectly here. Nicely done man.

Liu Wen Cheng: Taipei City Rider Portraits

I'm amazed at how rapidly the fixed gear scene spread throughout Asia, especially Taiwan. Liu Wen Cheng has been working on a series of photos documenting the riders in his home town of Taipei City. Check the rest of them out here, at his Flickr.

Fog adventures at Col de Agnes

Photos by Stefan Rohner

Stefan Rohner took some photos with Hipstamatic on his iPhone and the cheesy filters make the dense fog seem ever more eerie. Regardless of the media, these are rad photos.

Matt Lingo: Congo X-up

I cannot get over the lighting in this most recent photo set by Matt Lingo. When Matt Spencer announced he was on Leader, I knew the photos used in the ad had to be from Lingo's lens. Sure enough, today the rest of the photos surfaced. Stellar shots man. You really captured those dude's personalities!

Matt Lingo: Chula Vista Session

Speaking of Matt Spencer, Matt Lingo just posted up a nice jam session with the Chula Vista crew. Here's Matt, doing what he does best! Killer shots Mr. Lingo. Awesome lighting as always! Check the rest of the photos out here!

Boonphotography: Mårten Portraits

Mårten had the NYC ladies all worked up when he and his brother were in town earlier this year. They couldn't get enough of him. To add more fuel to the fire, Boonphotography snapped some portrait shots of him riding. Check the rest out here.

Justin the Fatty: Jakob Santos Wall Ride

Ok, this is the last dirt photo of the day, I promise. Justin the Fatty (heh) was hanging out with Jakob Santos this weekend while Jakob was slamming into this wall off a dirt bank. Pretty good dude but I'm wondering why you didn't do it half-nude. Tisk tisk. You're losing it man! Check more photos out here.
