My Tour and Instagram

I joked with Matt Lingo that I could just shoot Instagram during my next tour and most people wouldn’t know the difference. Here are a few images that made their way onto my Twitter feed during my trip. Some of my favorites are the shot of the trooper pulling me over for running a red, the crab shell and various landscape shots.

Touring: My Epilogue

So this is way, way past due. I was planning on posting my post-tour thoughts immediately after my tour. Makes sense right? Well, after getting over salmonella poisoning and then Interbike, I finally have time to sit down and post about it.

My head was racing before I left. I must have sat all my equipment out on the ground and put half of it aside at least a dozen times. Traveling minimally is not my forte and neither was touring at the time. I had done a series of centuries and have done countless road rides but an unsupported and solo tour was foreign to me.

After a few weeks, I’m ready to share with you what exactly I learned from this trip. What to take, what not to take and how much this all cost me.

Touring Essentials 05: Kershaw Knives – Made in the USA

I was really bummed when I got to Portland and wasn’t able to pick up a Kershaw knife in time to leave for my tour. Instead, I bought a Gerber, which is a perfectly fine knife but there’s nothing like an American made product like a Kershaw. I picked up one at the Mash store yesterday and while the “limited edition” anodizing might not be everyone’s cup of tea, these knives are a quality product. You’ll find yourself using a knife more often than you’d think while on tour. From cutting fruit to trimming rope down to hang your food and even the occasional splinter, having a sharp and solid product like this is well worth the money.

Post-Tour Self

How I really feel!

A few people have asked for a photo of what I look like after touring for 850 miles. While these photos can’t really show how I feel, you can see my busted blood vessel in my eye and blonding of my beard. Sunlight’s a great thing!

Alright, out to get some lunch! I have an insatiable appetite.

A Day in 10 Photos: 08.30.2011 PDX to SF – Day 09

Well, I made it. In one piece. Actually, more like 1,000 pieces held together by a dirty jersey and smelly bibs. I know I say this a lot but yesterday was a real bitch. I started out at Fort Ross and had about 90 miles to get to SF. Around mile 70, I decided to continue on HWY 1, instead of splitting off through the back country roads.
