Two Great Red Hook Crit Portraits by Craig laCourt

As I was going through all my Red Hook Crit photos, I went looking for the portraits that Craig laCourt was taking inside a box truck at the event. So far, these are the only two I can find. The one of Matteo on the left came from his blog and the one on the right, the Red Hook Crit Tumblr. I can’t wait to see the rest because these look amazing.

Recent Roll: The 2012 Red Hook Crit Afterparty

I feel like this party ruined me more than any other night in Brooklyn. The 2012 Red Hook Crit was a huge success and after the race, everyone headed over to The Bell House for the official after party. Let’s see, a bunch of hungry, dehydrated racers, good bourbon selection and a bunch of beer. It was a recipe for liver disaster. I even caught a few of the Mash dudes a little loose. Alex, you still owe me a drink!

Interview with David Trimble of Red Hook Criterium Race

Lab8 from Milano interviewed Dave Trimble, founder of the world’s best track bike criterium, the Red Hook Crit. Dave talks about the races humble beginnings as a birthday celebration for him, the current state, Dan’s win and where he plans on taking it in the future.

Velo News Doesn’t Know What a Track Bike Is

This is a track bike, not a fixed gear

I saw an article on Velo News (no, I won’t link to it) about the Red Hook Crit and it angered me to read such incompetent journalism.

“And gone this year were tight jeans, sneakers and the other garb synonymous with “alley cat” style races. Skinsuits and matching lycra were the styles of choice for participants.”

First of all, it’s not an “alley cat” and people never wore jeans to race the RHC, at least not the serious racers (Nick doesn’t count). It’s always been a serious race and quotes like this undermine the event. It’s as back-handed as you can get. Second of all, these TRACK BIKES were all USAC-legal for a mass-start race and everyone was pushing heavy track gearing. Don’t mistaken a bike that’s ridden on the street for fun with a bike that is built to race. And if you’re going to write an article on a widely-read news source, don’t get an idiot to source quotes, only to have him misquote people. Frederick Dreier, stick to what you know and that’s not track bikes.

The 2012 Red Hook Crit Cinelli Vigorelli Prize Bike

Dan Chabanov has won the Red Hook Crit for the third time, meaning he now has three prize bikes. Each year, Cinelli donates a complete build to the winner and year after year, the bikes keep getting better. The 2012 trophy bike was already in King Kog‘s window when I went by on Sunday, so I took it out for some lens love.

Fast and Loose: Thrown Blown x PiNP 2012 Red Hook Crit Video

The 2012 Red Hook Crit Coverage Presented by Cinelli USA

The last time I was at the Red Hook Crit, it was a small, intimate race through the dark, cobbled streets of Red Hook, Brooklyn. And even though I’ve paid close attention to the past two year’s event, I was not prepared to be greeted with a large, well-lit, legitimate closed course criterium. 20 laps of fast-paced track bike racing greeted me, complete with the standard spills and thrills. I feel like this year, more than before, the community as a whole embraced the event, sparking riders to travel from SF, LA and even as far as Italy and Spain. With Dan Chabanov defending his title, his competition came mostly from the legs of Mash‘s Rainier. With one lap to go, Dan’s solo gap was enough to seal his victory and Rainier took a solid second place. See the full results here.

It was the first time I’ve ever shot an event like this at night, so I wanted to try a few ideas out in field and for the most part, I’m pleased with the outcome.

Cinelli USA helped fund my trip out to the 2012 Red Hook Crit and below are select photos I shot for them.
